The Government confirms projects that benefit majority will continue

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont has insisted that his government’s major target is to resolve people's woes and therefore projects initiated by the previous government which are beneficial to the majority, will continue.

In retaliation to criticisms alleging the current government's intention to wipe out old cliques rather than tackle national problems, General Surayud explained that it is the duty of this government to cooperate with the Asset Examination Committee and the National Counter Corruption Commission in providing them with necessary information as requested. He also asserted that the government will not intervene in the procedure as the matter will be dealt with in accordance to the law.

IN regards to insufficient evidences implicating some people from the last administration, General Surayud said it is not easy for the relevant committees to find sufficient evidence to support the alleged graft cases.

Prime Minister Surayud will speak to the nation concerning his administrations's performance in the past 4-month via TV Channel 9 on February 13 at 8.30 pm. Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp (ยงยุทธ มัยลาภ) said the Prime Minister will also touch upon the government's intention to restore democracy and return power to the people by holding of a free and fair election.

The government spokesperson also conceded that communications between the government and the people had been distant. The government has therefore established four channels to fill up the space and invite exchange of opinions with the public. Those channels are Hotline 1111, Internet link via www.1111.go.th, postal contact addressed to the Government House and a center to accept direct complaints at Government House which is opened everyday during working hours.

The spokesman also ensured confidentiality for all complaints and suggestions.

If someone was to paint a black horse white, is the horse black or white?

I really can't fault the government too much for maintaining these policies (some, such as the million cows project, rebranded). It has never made much of an issue of the so called 'populist policies' of the Taksin gov't. That particular sin was most offensive to many in the media, some of its academic darlings and large sectors of the middle class.

It is now up to those same groups to heap the scorn on these policies that they heaped on them during Taksin's last months. I wonder if they will.
