Only when there is something to hide, debate is avoided There's also the case of David Cole, an American Jew who became a Holocaust denier/revisionist in the early 1990s. In September 1992, Cole went to Auschwitz and filmed himself taking a tour, deliberately presenting himself as a Jewish visitor. He subsequently produced videos arguing that the evidence for mass gassing at Auschwitz was fraudulent. The particularly well-known film was David Cole Interviews Dr. Franciszek Piper, in which Cole interviewed the then-curator of the Auschwitz State Museum (available on Rumble IF you have an interest in sanity checking your beliefs). The chronology is roughly this: Cole became a prominent Holocaust revisionist/denier in the early 1990s and made his Auschwitz film after visiting the camp in 1992. By 1994–95, he appears to have become convinced by some documentary evidence concerning gas chambers, particularly evidence concerning the gas chamber at Natzweiler-Struthof. There are accounts that he worked with French historian Jean-Claude Pressac and found that evidence persuasive. But in 1997–98, Cole received death threats from the Jewish Defense League, including a reported $25,000 bounty. He then issued a public recantation and disappeared under the name David Stein. Crucially, Cole later said that the 1998 recantation was false — that he made it to protect himself.
