U.S. Sen. Warren, mocked by Trump as 'Pocahontas,' says DNA test backs her ancestry

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, ridiculed by U.S. President Donald Trump as "Pocahontas" for claiming Native American heritage, hit back on Monday with DNA evidence she said supported her assertion, a possible preview of a bare-knuckles presidential campaign in 2020.

 

The Massachusetts lawmaker, known as a liberal firebrand in her party, said last month she would take a "hard look" at running for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Trump in 2020. She and Trump clashed frequently through the 2016 presidential campaign and Trump has cast aspersions on her claim to Native American ancestry.

 

"When I decided to run for Senate in 2012, I never thought that my family's Native American heritage would come under attack and my dead parents would be called liars," she said in a statement on Monday.

 

"And I never expected the president of the United States to use my family's story as a racist political joke," she said.

 

Trump taunted Warren over the issue at a July rally in Montana.

 

"I will give you a million dollars to your favourite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian," he said. "I have a feeling she will say 'no.'"

 

Warren reminded the president on Monday of his promise. "Please send the check to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Centre," she said on Twitter.

 

When asked about the DNA test, Trump said: "Who cares?" Then he denied making the comment, as he left Washington to visit hurricane-stricken areas in Florida and Georgia.

 

Later, Trump suggested to reporters in Georgia he could pay the $1 million he had wagered, but with a caveat: "I'll only do it if I can test her personally. That will not be something I will enjoy doing either," he said.

 

Trump's use of the name Pocahontas refers to a 17th century Native American woman associated with the British colony in Jamestown, Virginia, and was aimed at drawing attention to a controversy over her heritage raised during Warren’s 2012 Senate race. Trump's mocking reference has drawn criticism from Native American groups.

The analysis of Warren's DNA was done by Carlos Bustamante, a Stanford University professor whom the Boston Globe reported was an expert in the field.

 

The professor concluded that most of the senator's DNA showed European ancestry but that it had a Native American segment. Warren has said that her Native American ancestry possibly goes back to the 1700s, including Cherokee blood on her mother's side, according to family lore.

 

Warren's release of the results was criticized by Cherokee Nation Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr., who said; "Using a DNA test to lay claim to any connection to the Cherokee Nation or any tribal nation, even vaguely, is inappropriate and wrong."

 

Warren's move could be a prelude to a possible presidential run.

 

An architect of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau set up after the 2008 financial crisis, Warren has been a strong voice in the U.S. Senate on financial issues.

 

Warren, campaigning with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016, attacked Trump as an "insecure money grubber" driven by greed and hate.

 

"I hope she's running for president, because I think she'll be very easy," Trump said as he left the White House on Monday.

Hell my Son who is Thai/American shows 58% Southern Asian 42% European with 1.3% Native American mixed in there LMAO

The DNA results released by Elizabeth Warren show she is approximately 1/512 (0.1%) Native American, with a single ancestor, from around 400 years ago, possibly being Native American...

 

do we really accept that 0.1% legitimizes claims of being Native American?

To claim native american heritage & benefits/priveleges from the tribe i believe you have to be 50% or more native blood. The info came from a doco on Neveda indians that ran a cigar shop in Las Vegas.

Well bugger me Chuck. How should the average genyoowhine Cherokee heritage claimant get started on confirming the veracity of their alleged native American lineage? I mean, how did you get qualified for the job?

It depends on the tribe.  I have never heard of one requiring 50%, most of those NA's are dead.  There are no "Neveda Indians".  Lastly, Sen. Warren never claimed any privileges.

Chuck is off the reservation on that one.  She didn't claim any such thing with the results.  To get a CIB Cherokee, you have to trace back to the Dawes list, created in 1902 to give NA land away.  Any Cherokee not living in Oklahoma wasn't put on it, so basically over half the tribe will never be officially recognized by the tribe.  But, that also means that many other who say they are cannot be PROVEN wrong, so Trump was FOS in the first place, as usual.  lol.  And to get started, you usually hear from your parents that you have Cherokee ancestry, just like Warren heard from her parents.

She has as much claim to Native American heritage as your typical white EUROPEAN. Donald Trump can make a greater claim to Native American heritage because he's owned casinos.

No, it wasnt "proven" , it just states that "the results strongly support" , that isnt conclusive proof .

Not so.   The Bureau of Indian Affairs uses a standard of 1/4 degree of blood for BIA related benefits.   Tribes, however, may set a standard that is completely different.   Many tribes maintain rolls which have much less blood.  

 

Recently there was a case where an adopted child was removed from the white parents by a tribe because it did not approve of the adoption.   The child was 1/64 Indian.

 

At no time did she maintain she was an enrolled tribal member.

Regardless of what percent of Native American Warren is, one thing is certain. Trump never keeps his word, and the man does not have one nanogram of honor, in his entire body. The second thing that is certain is that he has more of an aversion to charity, than he does people of color. Anything to avoid fulfilling a promise, or helping those in need. Anything.

I have read the linked article.  It merely states that Warren's Native American ancestry may be a very small percentage.  Still, that's higher than zero and thus still supports her claim.

 

Also, in no way does it address or is relevant to your claim that:

Here's a study reported in the New York Times that talks about ancestry: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/25/science/23andme-genetic-ethnicity-study.html

"The researchers found that European-Americans had genomes that were on average 98.6 percent European, .19 percent African, and .18 Native American."

Warren's DNA is reported in many publications as being between 1/64th and 1/1024th. The above .18 referenced in the study falls between those 2 numbers.

Actually it proves her right and him wrong. She has never claimed citizenship of any native American tribe, only that her family had a native American ancestor and her family as recently as her parents generation faced discrimination due to their Native American ancestry. This discrimination was always a fact and now her heritage has been proven.

Perhaps he was referring to this:

However, he should have said European-Americans, not "the average white European".

 

But this just underscores how stupid Trump was to make such a statement.  If European-Americans have, on average, a measurable amount of Native American ancestry, how stupid is it to challenge some random European-American, to the tune of $1M, that they don't?
