"Foreigners throw trash too, you know!" - Thais reject notion they are solely to blame

5PM_V.jpg

Thais have hit back on Facebook that they are solely to blame for messing up Thai beaches.

The comments come after a woman under the name of "Aom Amongrat" posted a video and pictures of an unnamed foreigner collection trash at Nai Han beach.

The poster said that Thais should be ashamed that a foreigner was collecting rubbish.

But many posters countered that they were all foreigners on that beach anyway.

Winit Saengjae said: "There are only foreigners - I don't see why we should be ashamed".

Ball Jirawat agreed saying: "The foreigners should be ashamed. There are no Thais there".

Aiw Thidarat went further using some expressive language: "Farangs throw litter too. After they have scoffed down their lunch they just toss the trash anywhere. It's not just Thais to blame".

I think that most of the rubbish washed up on beaches comes from boats at sea, and not necessarily all Thai vessels.

Where's the robot they built to clean beaches? Haven't seen him anymore after the introductions. Is he still alive?

Remember being on Kho Samed walking along the beach with a local girl I was dating at the time. Along the way there was an empty 5 liter can of oil on the beach. I rhetorically asked, “Bloody Hell! Who goes round throwing crap like that on the beach?” She replied, “Yea, foreigners often throw their trash on the beach”.

Foreigners throwing their rubbish on the floor really is a pebble in the ocean compared to the locals doing it.

I suppose thats why Jomtien beach is relatively clean most of the time but once its a thai holiday, the rubbish is unbelievable....saw a girl in a restaurant yesterday picking her nose and rolling her bogies....dirty unclean nation

Nothing to do with it. Everyone will do what they want. It's up to city Hall to ensure the town is tidy. It's as if nobody is assigned to the task at all.

Robot, haven't heard of this. If true, it was probably made from quality recycled Thai metal scrap, and consequently been all rusted/seized up.

It may be a "pebble in the ocean", but farangs should not litter so as to show Thais what should be done. Of course, who's going to show the pig-sty farangs how to not be pigs (except the BMA officers in Bangkok looking to make 2,000 baht for the city)?

In California, USA it is a $1,000 USD (34,000 baht, give or take) fine to liter on a state highway. Most people, unless they are totally braindead or stoned out of their minds would not throw trash from vehicle for fear of inviting a pullover by a CHP unit.

I live by the sea, after a holiday beach is a disgrace litter everywhere and its a 90% Thai resort so that sort of scuppers the its not Thai thing.

Fair enough some Thais  all dressed up scarfs polo shirts clean up the beach

Ok ask about rest of the town and outlying countryside litter everywhere you get the famous Thai blank ( am i really being asked the theory of relativity) blank look.

i feel sorry for the real campaigners not the somchais looking for a photo op

Pure an simple its an education issue sadly 90% of all Thais  dont  seen litter as its never brought to their attention and combined with lazy couldn't care attitude  Thailand has a hell of a  long way to go.

I to have big fun "cleaning up" the beaches in Spain or South of France with my metal detector !!???? ...always find lot's of coins and other funny stuff on the beaches in EU.

Was not such a good catch in Thailand however as people seem richer and only seem to carry currency notes, as very few coins were found on the beach at Phuket ! ????

Last year the KMTU build a beach cleaning robot...they built it themselves cause that was much cheaper than one from overseas.

It was tested on jomtien beach iirc and they would build more of them.

It's hardly a uniquely Thai issue, the same thing happens in the Philippines during holidays, only they bring tents which they abandon as well.

In Phuket you search for weddingrings....those don't mean much there.

Evil furriners. I bet they bring their oil cans from the furrinerlands just so they can dump them on the beach. The most evil ones bring mercury lamps, too.

wife's office is at the local port, I often go down to say hi during the day and watch those fishing. Its not unusual to see mum and dad rock up with their rods and several bags of household rubbish. The rubbish gets thrown into the water on the inside shallows of the jetty then they take their rods and start fishing on the other side, rubbish is simply thrown where ever they want, thais have no respect for their country as can be seen by all the crap they throw on the streets, gutters and any waterways. Its also seen when they do it overseas when on tours, they do what ever is easiest for them.

Difference is, the Flippers unlike thais dont blame it on the Foreigners

Foreigners introduced the lovely ideals of trash, mindless consumption and unnecessary accumulation.

Kind of a twist on Civilising Missions.

Ain't it grand.

How can people that have no respect or shame for themselves be expected to have respect for anything else, you cant change a leopards spots.

Beaches aside, it's very hard to find a public trash can in any Thai city.
I think most of us are used to having trash cans on the street, coupled with the threat of fines if you get caught discarding your garbage in the road.

It's another one of those mindsets that have to change on a basic level before anything gets better

  • Popular Post

My neighbor would pick up trash all along the road outside our complex. He worked hard. The garbage was worse after the weekend....go figure! Good for him, the road looked good. He moved away and it's back to pigsty again.  Didn't think there were that many foreigners around here!
