Teachers must adapt to changing world, summit told

The role of a teacher must go beyond lecturing in an era where advanced technology alienates people from one another and online information is a mix of truth and lies, Royal Society member Prof Emeritus Sumon Amornvivat said at a recent summit.

Teachers must arrange a learning process for students' physical and mental development for a well-rounded well-being, she said at the 11th Annual Congress for Teacher Professional Development at the IMPACT Muangthong Thani on October 17-19.

With calls for equity, rights and liberty as the country becomes more of a democratic society, education emphasising life and social development becomes more varied and teachers' roles expand from being a lecturer of knowledge to also managing the learning process to develop the youths' brains, hearts and minds.

Teachers should also be students' friends to help keep them on the path for good as children spend four to seven hours a day at school.

This is enough time to forge a loving bond, she said, that will lead to endless learning opportunities and lasting friendships, the 86-year-old Sumon said, adding that she has stayed in contact with former students and younger generations.

Education is a human development process that eradicates ignorance and promotes knowledge and wisdom, she said.

An independent committee for education reform member, Prof Emeritus Charas Suwanwela, said teachers were important for the country to overcome poverty and become more competitive.

The Thailand 4.0 policy for education did not limit learning to only computer and technology system development, but also to innovative management of education and gave more freedom to restore faith to teachers, students and schools.

"The role of Faculty of Education does not end when students graduate and get their degree, but also serves as life-long education. They must become the Transformative Education as there is the need for flexibility and constant self-improvement," Charas said.

Transformative Education allows learners to engage in appropriate and challenging ways of learning and to critically assess and develop their beliefs, values and habits of thinking that they will have learnt uncritically when younger.

Charas also urged school administrators to have an open mind and be more supportive to changes in digital and social transformation.

The Digital Learning Platform should be applied to boost education quality, reduce inequity and create the community of learning, he said. The education reform needed co-operation from all sides, he added.

The EDUCA 2018 was held with the theme promoting the Value of Teachers in response to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s report published earlier this year that cited a crisis where teachers were suffering from stress and burnout and another study that found fewer than a third of teachers believe that teaching is a valued profession.

Oh dear.

The deepened and blind hypocrisy continues on from those who bear false enlightenment.

It appears in numerous forms.

Equity in Thai education is never going to happen. For schools to be of high and equal quality mindset shifts in all stakeholders are needed.

Parents: Parents are always going to invest in supplementary education and strive to choose the best schools for their little darlings.  They will use their economic, social, and cultural capital to ensure that their children are winners in the educational arms race.

Teachers: Some teachers will always save that little bit extra to teach in the evenings and weekends to earn additional income. Educational corruption will win out!

Institutional leadership: Some school leaders will try to protect inequity to protect the flow of tea money. Recent history has reminded us of this.

Government: The country's leadership will always give preference to those having the louder voice. In Thailand the middle class Bangkok elite will always secure a disproportionate percentage of funds. The regions will be forever the pool of labor needed for the more wealthy centre.

Teachers form only a part of the inequity.

Nothing new here.  Basically indoctrinate the kiddies with neo-Orwellian morality as well as mindless, unquestioning compliance to Thai 'norms'.  Shelter them from any online information that doesn't fit that mold.

Goodness NO. This is the root cause of the issues here in Thailand. Grades are rewarded using emotion and as a teacher this should never come into the equation.

Results and examination results should be strictly on merit alone. This lady is the reason why education here is so behind the times.

That might be a start - a worthy and valued salary.

A decent teacher's training curriculum of promoting and encouraging challenging and critical thought, where open and alternative ideals might be passed on to future generations.

Hardly any teachers in the world get a worthy and valued salary.

Why should this start in Thailand, where the teachers generally aren't that good.

My Thai pal is a newly retired English teacher, he can say 'go straight', and 'go home' when we're out cycling or walking.

Those are the only 4 English words he can use, and he must have been teaching English for 35 years.

I’m all for encouraging better teachers and ideas, but how about more emphasis on ecoruaging good parenting.

Believe me, most parents care.  The problem that they face is that have no idea what to do.  Remember most parents went through the crappy system.

Also, parents have a hard time helping their children because they have no idea of what the child is being taught.

I have more parents coming to me with the same problem.

How do I know the school is telling me the truth about my child?

If the school will not tell me what they need help with how can I find the help.

The advantage that people like myself have is that we can run a program suited to the child.  We can honestly evaluate if the really do understand the teacher or if the teacher is blowing smoke to the parents.

One parent actually asked me to attend a meeting with their child so that I could ask the right questions and would not be intimidated by the teacher?

Before I could say yes  (In the case of the school in question I would have loved it)  My office manager explained that I was not allowed.

DAMN

That would have been sellout better that UFC

Please people, this is Thailand, not your home countries.

Concentrate on that fact before thinking that the Military Government

cares a wit, to begin with.

They are comfortable with their words being totally detached from reality. To them, words have little meaning.

The teachers don't want to change, like the country they live in a world of their own,

They care to change, but need approval firstly.
