Soi Dog project marks 250,000th sterilisation

Chaiyo, the 250,000th dog sterilised by Soi Dog.

The Soi Dog Foundation (SDF) says it has sterilised its 250,000th animal.

The SDF said its campaign of catch, neuter, vaccinate and release (CNVR) was sterilising more stray dogs and cats than any other project in the world.

Founded 15 years ago, Phuket-based SDF said its mission is to end the suffering of street dogs and cats in Thailand.

It has been applied by SDF in Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Phang Nga province, successfully resulting in an ethical and painless decline in the stray population, the NGO said.

SDF founder John Dalley said: “We are extremely proud to have reached such a tremendous milestone, which was made possible thanks to our supporters from all around the world.

“It is impossible to calculate how many millions of puppies and kittens have been spared from being born into a life that would usually be short before they died of starvation, disease or violence, or, at best, a life spent scratching to survive on the streets.

“A tiny percentage would be fortunate to be found by Soi Dog or other groups before they died, and placed in a proper, loving home.”

Soi Dog’s current major CNVR focus is Bangkok, which has an estimated 640,000 street dogs. It now has four teams manning mobile clinics in different districts of Bangkok.

Another team is doing the same work in Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

The teams sterilise and vaccinate dogs and cats against as many as six common diseases, including rabies, and also rid each animal of fleas and ticks before releasing it, usually within 24 hours.

Each animal sterilised and vaccinated by an SDF team has a number tattooed on its ear, an assurance that it is safe.

The organisation said Phuket is the prime example of how successful CNVR is. The dog population on the island has been reduced from around 80,000 in 2003 to about 6,500, and Phuket is the only province in Thailand recognised by the government as rabies-free.

The SDF received the Rescue Organisation of the Year Award from the Pet Philanthropy Circle on October 19 in New York, and was the winner of the People’s Choice Award, after receiving the most online votes and from gala attendees.

Janis Rosenthal, president of Soi Dog Foundation USA, and rescue manager Cristy Baker received the award.

Well done.  Perhaps the junta should have consulted with this organization before coming up with their flawed pet registration program.  We all pretty well know the program was more about filling government coffers than public service.

Only 250.000? I bet that there are many millions of soidogs in Thailand.

One day i had to babysit my friends dog for some weeks, she was on period....Then next morning i found her on the street connected to a soidog and they couldn't come apart anymore....

I 'm very sure i closed the gate well but didn't use the lock...the dogs had opened the gate to do it....

My friend was not angry though and he gave all the pups away....

That soidog has a collar which he got from another farang...the farang (american) heard about our moobaan getting cleaned of soidogs so he put a collar on this one....My friend is a high policeman, when i told that to the american he acted like it was not his soidog....the idiot....he also fed it many times on the street. Great, 19,750,000 to go, providing you sterelise females AND males... Knowing the vast majority of Thai, macho, guys hate the idea of anything 'male' being sterelised, good luck though. The idea gives them nightmares: as lame, tame, but dominant, and brutal, as they are, they dream of women severing off the only bits of their bodies being active...

What's not a joke, is that, indeed, Thai men accept female dogs and cats to be sterelised, but mostly strongly oppose males to be castrated, while male sterelisation is a minor and simple surgical intervention, opposed to the, heavy, neutering intervention of females. Aah, Thainess!

That’s your best anti American story lol! The article also states it’s the 250,000th soi dog sterilized it didn’t say how many soi dogs there are here.

You were also the one who didn’t lock the gate and scooby doo knew how to open it I guess with his paws!  So even if your story is correct the dog who had pups was on YOUR watch! So who is stupid here????

I think this program is great however.

How can someone contribute to it?? Anyone know?

My gate was closed well, i only didn't use that hanging lock...it was not possible to slide it open plus it's a heavy steal gate from 5 meters long.

That soidog belonged to the American since he put a collar on it...so his dog forced himself onto my property where he raped the dog of my friend and made her pregnant.

The story would get even more interesting if i told my thai policefriend that the soidog belonged to the american who lives near. I didn't do that though but where i live there are no soidogs since they were all rounded up except the ones with collar.

Now who's stupid here? I bet my policefriend can make it very hard for that american if he wants.....but i have no interest in that.

I honestly can’t believe you responded. You still didn’t lock it as you seem to be 1000% sure, perhaps it was left ajar in lapsed memory. Why is the neighbor being American such an issue? Maybe he was Canadian. Raped?? Really ! You are OTT!

" Soi Dog project marks 250,000th sterilisation"

And almost 250,000 negative posts in TV Forums anytime anyone posted that the solution is to sterilise.

Already we have 2 from the 7 who have posted in this thread thus far.

The negativism accomplishes nothing. The Soi Dog project is the way to a solution.

I'm sure they are looking for volunteers and/or contributions (props to alex8912).

But easier for so many TVF posters to post something negative and open another Chang.

Gripe that nothing is being done, then gripe when something IS being done.

Your friend is part of the problem by not having his dog sterilised.

We posted the same minute. Thanks to you too. I will follow up with my promise to contribute next week when I arrive back in Bangkok for the winter. ????????????????

So you think that EVERY dogowner needs their dog to get sterilised? Even when you live in a moobaan and keep the dog behind the gate all days?

That's ridiculous...it's the ones who let their dogs roam the streets who are the bad ones.

Obviously the dog wasn't behind the gate all day.

Accidents - and negligent dogsitters - do happen.

Another ridiculous reply....

The dog was behind the gate and i closed the metal hinge...so it couldn't push the gate open...the dog also is too small to open the hinge while that soidog was a very big one who could reach it....still it's a miracle that he managed to do it.

And yet there are many millions of unsterilised mutts still on the streets.

Obviously this project is not working and in reality is just a waste of time and money.

The solution could be rather simple.

1/. Round up and detain the idiots who keep feeding these vermin.

2/. Round up and detain the dogs, then let them go hungry for a week.

3/. One at a time put each of the do-gooder idiots in a cage (the type used for cage fighting) along with six of the stray mutts and let them fight to the death.

4/. Once the victor has reached the euphoric state of believing they are spared, drag them outside and execute them with a 12 gauge.

While I must admit that this may not be the most humane way to deal with the matter, it would certainly produce the desired results.

Yes, I would love my time in the cage with one of these idiots who think that they are doing some good.

In reality they are making the problem worse and as such deserve a good spanking.

When dogs do it, they will stay connected for some time. You have to wait, its already done then.

250,000 dogs who still roam free to bite and attack people, including mauling kids to death and scaring the life out of cyclists and joggers.

250,000 dogs still roaming free and crapping everywhere in the street.

250,000 dogs still roaming free to spread rabies, mange and other diseases.

Why on earth didn't Soi Dog put 250,000 mangy soi dogs to sleep painlessly?  Now that would be something to celebrate!
