BANGKOK, 29th October 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Commerce expects Thailand to sell no less than 11 million tons of rice to foreign buyers this year.

Adul Chotinisakorn, the Director-General of the Foreign Trade Department, said that demand for rice continues to grow in the global market, and he expects Thai rice exports to surge in the last three months of 2018.

The Foreign Trade Department is delivering the 6th batch of rice totaling 100,000 tons to the China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO) as part of the government-to-government deal between Thailand and China.

He added that the Philippines and Japan have been holding auctions for rice import permits, so Thailand can expect more orders from both countries. As of now, Thailand and Japan have agreed on an 87,000-ton rice deal.

In the first 10 months of 2018, Thailand sold 8.9 million tons of rice worth 4.6 billion US dollars to overseas buyers, he noted, expressing confidence that this year’s 11 million tons target will be achieved.
