Army vows to take good care of new draftees

BANGKOK, 2 November 2018 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Army has arranged a welcome activity for its second batch of newly-drafted soldiers while promising to ensure their well-being during their service.

Maj Gen Tharapong Malakham, Commissioner of the 11th Military Circle, presided over an orientation course for new conscripts in the second batch of 2018 as they reported themselves for duty. Many arrived with their family and relatives.

The draftees, on this occasion, were provided with information on their physical training procedures, academic study programs and vocational training opportunities available during their stay as well as welfare benefits.

The 11th Military Circle Commissioner also informed the newcomers of the policy of the Royal Thai Army Chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong to develop soldiers into future role models and to ensure a good quality of life for them.

A tour was also conducted for accompanying family members through various amenities available for the soldiers, including lodgings, training facilities, canteen, gym and first aid room.

Did they have to jump in a river naked, or maybe beaten with thick tree branches?

The military can 'vow' all they like. They ousted the legitimate government, 'claiming' it was for the good of the country, 'vowing' to be gone within a year.

Beatings, toppling elected governments.  If they did nothing, that would be an improvement.

Some of the non junta parties are running on ditching the draft, that would surely garner a lot of votes from the families that can't afford to bribe their sons out of having to serve.

Agreed, but where would the officers get the minions from to do the cleaning and carry shopping for the wives, or clean out the chickens, or wash the cars, or cut the grass, or..........on and on, the list is endless...

They don't need most of the officers either...

But will the military  ban military conscription ?   Never known the military to take orders from the lowly elected folk.  They take orders from the unknown

I'm not sure it has much use for an army.

Army has to promise to keep their soldiers safe while turning them into killing machines.  Luckily thai soldiers have seen almost no active service, so just a matter of not getting on the wrong side of any of their NCOs.

Army vows to take good care of new draftees ....by seconding them to households of only benevolent generals. For the sake of the mental and physical health of the conscripts, they will no longer be forced to do gardening or wash the generals' fleets of cars under the midday sun - they will instead be woken up at 3 a.m., when it is much cooler, to do such arduous tasks.

National service starts early in Thailand.

I thought 'military operations' were the life-saving ones carried out on conscripts beaten senseless?

The best thing the military could do is send the conscripts home or back to Uni which the military service interrupts, the military get enough volunteers a year to maintain strength, that's because there's only crap paid jobs for them at home.

Horrified, teaching absolutely, entirely, the wrong lessons to innocent impressionable pre school children!

Really should not happen!

They are standing too far away from the available cover when throwing those grenades!

Now correct me if I am wrong, there is no need for a vow, as they have a legal and ethical obligation to take care of these young men.

Remembering the good old days when perspective draftees could opt out join the monkhood for a few months.

Military conscription is illogical in it's practice here.

Yet, we all know the base reasoning to keep a increasingly standing army force, don't we?

Can I say domestic purposes only?

I'm assuming that you've witnessed an annual "Children's Day" celebration?

That's truly horrifying.

Of the last several decades, there has been this subliminal social mix of forced militarism [within a Buddhist culture] upon the Thai landscape - observe all of officialdom and their quasi-military dress. Police, civil servants, ammat circles, teachers, provincial officers, etc....

All, good little soldiers with the intent of perpetuating this dominant circle.

New government vows to abolish mandatory drafting and lock you in barracks

Of interest to eligible kids looking to do it properly...

(Wink wink, nod nod).

....unless of course they don't.

Hard to change institutional habits in an organization this large led by people with egos to match the size of the organization.

OH REALLY!!!!!!
