Cycling event held to raise funds for mammography program

BANGKOK, 2nd November 2018 (NNT)-Kanchanabaramee Foundation and the Ministry of Public Health will launch a cycling event in December to raise funds for breast cancer screening for at-risk women in remote areas of Thailand. 

The cycling event for breast cancer awareness will be held on Sunday December 16th. Interested individuals or groups of people can apply via the Facebook page of the event or by calling 02-591-8185 to 6. 

The largest cycling team will receive His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s trophy, while the second and third largest cycling groups will be awarded Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha’s and Public Health Minister Dr. Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn’s trophies respectively. 

Kanchanabaramee Foundation President Dr. Somyos Deerasami said today the objective of the event is to raise funds to support a mobile mammography program that will give women in remote areas access to breast cancer screening. 

According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer was the most common type of cancer found among Thai women last year. Women aged 40 years and older are most at risk especially if there is a history of breast cancer in their families. 

As many as 40 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 10 of them died of the disease per day last year. Breast cancer can also be found in girls as young as 12 years old and even among women who no longer have periods. 

It is also known that men can develop breast cancer, although they only represent 1% of breast cancer patients. Women are urged to undergo breast cancer screening regularly as early detection can save their lives.
