Questions about visa exemption

Featured Replies

I guess this has been discussed many times but I cannot find any useful info, some people say you can have as many visa exemptions as you want when entering by air, some say there is a limit of 3 entries in a 6 month period time.

I have entered Thailand by air 4 times since July 2017. 9 days from 2-9 July 2017, 28 days from 17 September - 15 October, 14 days from 3 February - 17 February 2018 and 10 days from 13 May to 23 May 2018.

I am flying again tomorrow and I am gonna use the visa exemption again. My question is, should I be worried about something if I show proof of 20.000 THB in cash (in foreign currency) and a return flight ticket? If I am planning to fly back to Thailand next year, should I apply for a tourist visa at my home country or can I keep using the visa exemption?

There is no set limit when entering by land. It is up to the individual IO whether or not they let you in. They are mostly interested in the time spent in the country rather than the number of times you've entered. Your history doesn't indicate you're trying to live/work in the country, which is a big plus.

If you are questioned about your frequent visits/stays they may want to see an onward flight, 10K in cash and a hotel booking. Even if you have the cash etc, they could still deny entry and don't usually ask to see those things unless they are considering denying you entry.

They rarely deny entry and if they are concerned about you overusing visa exemption will tell you to get a visa next time.

Entering with a SETV will reduce the (small) chances of getting questioned/denied.

I assume you meant by air not land. By land they are limited to 2 per calendar year.

Thanks for the info, I think I will apply for a tourist visa from my home country next time I visit Thailand. I have one more question, I was thinking to visit Angkor Wat next time I travel to Thailand. If I land in Bangkok, then travel by minivan to the Cambodian border and come back to Thailand again 2 or 3 days after, would I need a METV?

You could buy a Re-entry Permit (1,000 baht). On re-entry you’ll be granted permission to stay for whatever you have remaining of the original 60 day stay.

E.g. If you leave on day 20, stay out 2 days, you’ll be given 38 days on return.
