BANGKOK, 7 November 2018 (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a project to prepare for Loi Krathong festivities along municipal canals.

BMA Governor,Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang, inaugurated the project at Ong Ang Canal in Samphanthawong district and under Rama VIII bridge. Preparations include repainting buildings and walkways, renovating five canal bridges, installing 46 security cameras and planting trees.

The governor added that renovation of 250 meters of canal, from Damrong Sathit Bridge to Phanuphan Bridge, will be completed before the Loi Krathong festival, which falls on November 22nd this year. The rest of the canal renovations should be completed in March next year.

Pol Gen Asawin urged festival-goers to use krathongs made of biodegradable materials and to refrain from lighting fireworks.

Loi Krathong is an annual lunar festival celebrated in Thailand as well as in neighboring countries. The festival began as a Brahmin tradition to offer thanks to the goddess of water.

The traditional krathong is made from a cross-section of a banana tree trunk, which is then elaborately decorated with folded banana leaves, flowers, a candle and joss sticks.

In the evening, people light the candle and joss sticks, make a wish and float their krathong on a body of water. It is believed that the krathongs carry away  and bad luck, while fulfilling wishes that were made for the coming new year.

Candles and incense sticks are a fire hazard, so like fireworks and lanterns, they should be banned.  And then - Loi Krathong should also be banned.  Then Songkran.  In fact - ban any activity that people consider fun.

Quite right. Dangerous dartboards were banned, why not the great fire and pollution hazards of Loi Krathong. The floaty candles are supported by foam which ends up where?
