Nida poll shows 77 percent of people say they don’t understand electoral system

More than 95 percent of respondents in an opinion poll said they intended to go to the polls while over 77 percent admitted they didn’t know that they will have to cast only one ballot, according to an opinion poll conducted by the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida).

Nida Poll gauged the opinions of 1,261 people aged from 18 upward of different levels of education and different occupations across the country during November 5-7 about their understanding of the new electoral system under the 2017 Constitution.

Under the new electoral system, a voter will cast just one ballot for both the constituency and party-list candidate instead of two separate ballots as in previous elections. The ballot is counted as the vote of the candidate and of the party for party-list seats.

And no vote for the senate.

Not to sound condescending, but Thai folks are not all that savvy when it comes to elections and who is the right candidate for the job, they easily swayed by gifts promises of free this and that and not avert to take money in lieu of buying their votes, so no wonder they don't understand politics, and to be honest, many of the more free thinking among us don't get it either...

Ahh...

Those appointments have already been taken care of.

Military and loyalist associations.

Surprise.

Which was the intention. Highly likely they also have no idea of whats in the constitution. Not letting the public know the lengths they have gone to for keeping control has been a priority.

i pray that the failure to understand is Not a failure to comprehend but rather a failure to have been informed

I reckon it's 77% of political candidates; no point learning about the electoral system when the army puts in a new Government every few years.

But who can blame them?

Best strategy is to vote for the person promising you the most in the short run, and preferably they pay even before you cast your vote (in cash), because there simply is no long run in Thai politics. Before you know if the army takes over and changes all the rules again, so better try to get your hands on as much as possible before that happens.

Do they need to ?

Thought they were given 50 baht by village headman and told to vote

for who they said ?

Or has something changed from the last time there was a free vote !!!!!!! :giggle:

No-one understands the system.....it won't matter and probably won't be explained to the population....the results will be the same. An military party win!

Wasn't that the intention of the farce?

They may or not have been given a sum of money - B50 or B500?

They then went and voted for whoever they wanted.

The probability this time round is that the freedom of choice will be removed, by the time various parties have been dissolved at the last moment, and their replacements found themselves, for various beaurocratic reasons, unable to stand.

Cunningly designed and redesigned by the devious Wissanu to achieve exactly that purpose.

Many of the more free thinking among us still don’t get that gifts don’t guarantee hearts and minds that translate into votes.

Not next year since all those parties are probably gonna be dissolved or banned.

This year, they will just one new song from Mr P and a ticket with his face on it to put in the ballot... ????

Mission accomplished!

One ballot, one vote, keeping things simple. No worries.

Yet it will take them 60 days to count those single ballots. Seems the people that designed the system don't understand it either.

The electoral system was designed so it could not be understood. While stealing an election it is best that the device in place can be explained in a variety of ways depending on which fits your needs...all different, all effective.

Well it should be easy enough to explain. Every now and then you go to a polling station to show your face and put a piece of paper in so the same old farts that have taken the country hostage can do nice photo ops. Feel free to translate to Thai.

Of course, they don't need to know - military style, do as I say etc.
