Capital police seek surrogacy mastermind

Phnom Penh’s anti-trafficking police are seeking to arrest the mastermind behind a surrogacy case that resulted in the arrest of 15 people on Thursday. Colonel Touch Saren, acting chief of the anti-trafficking police, yesterday said the 15 people were arrested in a Sen Sok district house.

“The 15 people were arrested Thursday without their mastermind. We are now investigating the case to identify who is behind this,” Col Saren said. “I cannot tell you more about the mastermind because the case is still under investigation.” He noted that the 15 people involved in the surrogacy case will appear before judges today.

Col Saren said that 11 of them were mothers, two were cooks and two were unspecified. In June, 32 women were arrested following a raid on a house in Russey Keo district. The women were charged with human trafficking, along with five members of a surrogacy ring.
