Democrat Party unveils “New Dems” — its own version of young politicians

Not to be left out by other parties, the Democrat Party today unveiled a group of 21 young members, collectively known as the “New Dems”, who are touted as new faces of the country’s oldest political party.

Media attention centred on Surabot Leekpai, the 31-year-old son of former party leader Chuan Leekpai and Prit Watcharasindhu, a 25-year-old cousin of party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva – not only because of their family relations but also because of what they have proposed.

Prit wants the current military conscription system to be replaced with voluntary enlistment. The young Democrat has just been discharged after serving a six-month conscription.

Ah... no.

It is only because of their family relations; otherwise, you would have ignored them completely. I know it. You know it. We all know it.

Respectfully, gushing and breathless prose should be saved for those who have actually earned it or actually done something.

They actually found a young member! Pity the old dinosaurs wont let them do anything in the party for a couple of decades.

Six months conscription eh?

I wonder why not two years, like the common people?

Yes true. But in reality these 2 probably went through the school training and can be called up until 40 or 45yrs old. And the THAI kids thinking before and now  is no problem, do the training and never be a soldier again. But I really think this regime will flip that soon and cream call all they think are the best. They have how many millions of kids and young adults and adults who are basically trapped by signing their name to the devil in order to be with Buddha and free? Tens of millions at this point. And my son will finish next week as is in last year of high school, but him and I know any war breaks out or they start calling in reserves, he is on the first airplane to the USA to stay with my family there. This regime has a bigger marching plan for the military here. I can feel it.

I wouldn't worry about the Thai military fighting any wars....it's, how shall I put this delicately, more 'internally' focussed!

Yes agree. War is also in the Southern area. Same thing. He will not partake in it if a civil war breaks out. Well at least not on their side if he chooses to, and I seriously advise him not to if it happens. He is a peace loving kid.

The new Democrats will only shoot 50 protesters

Young old fogeys - with all the privilege and selfishness of their elders. Don't ever - EVER - look to the 'Democrat' party to give Thailand a fair and equitable future. No decent and idealistic youngster would want anything to do with the 'Democrat' party - which has helped to land us in the autocracy that we now 'enjoy'. Anyone (especially youngsters) with any moral backbone and principle would spurn the 'Democrats' - and go to a much fresher, as yet untainted party, such as Thanathorn's Future Forward. But to be a youngster in the 'Democrat' party - my God - these are old, Establishment fogeys and lackeys while still in their twenties. Imagine how they will be when they are in their fifties! No hope from such types. And waffling on about 'e-sports' won't cut it. Pathetic!

Don’t worry about this too much. The military don’t have a re-call system and I have yet to see any laws regarding failure to report. This conscription is a joke and really has little to offer to a real war except maybe in the cookhouse.

My son told me the other day he doesn't want to clean any ranking officers toilets or be a maid slave. So demeaning. This is the stuff that the kids are talking about in school nowadays. Don't figure. They despise the powers that be and want a country that represents them, not the old elite wealth A Plug Holes.

These new democrats, they're the cool kids who did that rap song, Prathet Ku Mi, aren't they?

Same old s**t, different odor......

Some are fooled, some aren't.

That is also available for the common people JAG if they do some training while they are going to school / uni.

So your remark is baseless if you were hinting at anything inappropriate.

Still half a year conscription is a half year too much. Thailand should have a smaller professional army. I doubt it will happen as the generals would have less opportunity to steal.
