Cabinet gives the green light for medical ganja

Thai Rath reported that the Thai government had given the green light for ganja and krathom to be used for medicinal purposes.

A decision on the issue was made by the cabinet on Tuesday.

They said that this was in line with evidence from countries around the world about the benefits of ganja for those suffering from many diseases.

Though they cautioned that the drugs would still remain a Class 5 substance despite having their narcotics status changed to allow research for medical use.

Changes to the law still place restrictions on the quantity, use and movement of the drugs with strict government controls.

Thai Rath accepted that many people had been growing ganja for their own use in Thailand including medical use.

Thailand will become the first Asia country to enact change following changes to the law in many other countries and states around the world.

Well, it’s all going to pot
Whether we like it or not
The best I can tell

The elite is doing well
While the farmers gone to hell
And we’re sure gonna miss them a lot

Wouldn't want to be the first person busted with quantity after this decision, they'll prosecute harshly to set an example to emphasize that marijuana has NOT been legalized.

Great news, but if its ok as a medicine, why can't it be OK as a recreational substance?

It does not even need to be harmfully smoked to enjoy as a nice mellow.

Its such a pity the anti-drug grumps are so scared of 'reefer madness' they cannot even imagine the wonderful 'mai bpen rai' mood this puts most casual users into, a lovely mood, and without spilling into a sudden swing into violence, there's also no stupid and offensive behaviour like spraying walls, hangovers, or even any danger of an overdose.

A litre of Spirits downed in one hit can kill! The only way ganja will ever kill you, is if a tonne of it falls off a police truck onto your head.

Come on Thailand, do the the right thing, you know it makes sense!

Perhaps. But the genie is out the bottle, and as in the progressive (read: sensible) US states, it will be easy for savvy users to game the system with sympathetic Physicians to get a Medical Card.

Furthermore, don't quite have this confirmed, but my Thai girl was saying that the Thai media has announced elderly and/or the medically exempt will even be able to grow their own, if that's true, its 'game over' for any attempt to seriously police prohibition of this wonderful plant.

After that, they may as well get the population to stop riding in the back of trucks! 555

But, this may be a misunderstanding caused by the line found in the above report:

"Thai Rath accepted that many people had been growing ganja for their own use in Thailand including medical use."

Im old

Perhaps, the first step toward legal recreational use.

Hope springs eternal.

???? You know that it is a purely financial decision, in order to steal a march on their rivals. It's not as if the benefits are newly discovered.

IMHO I believe that until uncle sam goes into full federal legalization Thailand won't venture from medical. Personally, as you said earlier, it hasn't killed anyone whereas alcohol is a known killer. Even if they could just switch over 20% of the problem drinkers to smoking, the world would be a more peaceful place.

Forget it, so many people will get caught daily with weed that the idiots won't be able to prosecute anyone anymore...

This country is doing the right move ! I still can't believe it knowing how stupid usually are people in charge, but it seems real now !

So let's see... there are patents granted for medical ganja and now it's being forcefully pushed through. Somebody rich is getting richer. No news, really.

Move over, rice, make room for the NEW crop!
