A tour company owner was fined 2,000 baht by police in Surat Thani after threatening a taxi driver with a sword.

A video showed Suphakit Sindamrern, 39, the apparent owner of Buddy Travel, in the Kaset market area, go to his car to retrieve a sword from the trunk.

Suphakit told a local land transport official yesterday that it was all a misunderstanding.

The argument was over two foreign tourists who had inquired about transport after getting out of a minivan.

Suphakit has a vehicle that he uses to ferry passengers around but it is not licensed.

He was fined by the police for having an offensive weapon and could face further sanction up to another 2,000 baht from the local land transport office regarding use of a vehicle not registered as a taxi service.

So, spraying graffiti on a rebuilt wall is 50 times worse than threatening someone with a sword !

No wonder the justice system here is a laughing stock.

No excuse to threaten violence but as grinding out a living is getting tighter for the Thais I expect to see more of this. There's a lot of people barely scraping a living trying to provide for their families. So whoever takes the helm next year would be well advised to try to improve the station of life of the working folk. People have a breaking point and if it occurs collectively....
