Anyone Using 1Gbps package from AIS or True?

I'm on AIS's 200/50 plan, but since I paid my monthly bill on time AIS just gave me one free day on their 1000/1000 plan.   Before when paying on time they gave me 300/300 for one day.  This is the first month they offerred 1000/1000 for day...expect that's due to their 1000Mb speed plan being pretty new.   But I need to activate the one free day of upgrade speed which I plan to do over the next week...pick a day when I think I will be home a lot so I can play/test with the 1000Mb speed plan.

I do know from taking advantage of the 1 day free upgrade to 300/300 a couple of times, I really couldn't take advantage of that increased speed in my two story concrete home because the majority of my home network connections are via Wifi vs Ethernet.  About the best I can get consistently on a Wifi connection "from where I use my devices in the house" is around 275/275 on 5Ghz....and I do have an access points up and downstairs.

Now if I get within a couple of meters with no obstructions between the device and router (like furniture or wall obstructions) I can pull the 300/300 on some of my newer 5Ghz devices. But older devices can not.  And lord knows I don't need 300Mb "upload" speed since I upload very, very little.

And the few items I have connected via ethernet like my Playboxes which only have 100Mb ethernet ports and only need around 25Mb speed to stream 4K video (not that AIS TV/movies offer an 4K programming)...or around 5Mb speed for standard TV channel/movie channel streaming, even my 200/50Mb speed plan is big time overkill.

But anyway, I'll be giving their 1000/1000 speed plan a one day try here in the near future...I'll give some feedback.

I got that offer but assumed that it would be router-dependent.  Most routers cannot handle that speed, and since my router from them is many years old I'm guessing it wouldn't handle these speeds.

I gave it up last month .

More info would be appreciated. Gave up what (AIS or True), and why?

You could be right.  I just activated the one free day at 1000/1000 on my AIS Fibre and can't get anything close to 1Gb speed on the download side but the upload speed at least gets to about 77% of 1Gb.

Tests done using an ethernet connection to my Lenovo i5 CPU, 8GB, SSD laptop.

I tried several different servers on speedtest.net, nperf.com, and testmy.net.    If I didn't know better I would think the upgrade was not to 1000/1000 but 300/1000 because when I was briefly on the 300/300 plan two previous times my download speed was approx 320Mb just like it's benchmarking right now on 1000Mb download speed.

My AIS Fibre-provided modem/router is around 3 years old...a Huawei H8245H...that came with my first AIS Fibre plan of 50/10 when I first signed up in mid 2016...later I upgraded to their 100Mb plan and over a year ago to their 200Mb plan.    It's a fiber optics router....fiber cable goes all the way to the router.  The AIS-provided Huawei router is set to bridge mode and feeds my personal router which is a newer model ASUS 86U....what a person would consider a higher end router.  Saw plenty of online reviews in the 86U's ability to handle 1Gb speeds.

Since I've took advantage of the free 1 day at 300/300 two times and I could reach that speed no problem (actually around 320Mb speed) with an ethernet connection, but not able to go much above 300Mb download speed on the 1000/1000 plan.  Maybe it's just a settings somewhere/needs some performance tweaking....or maybe the Huawei router is the chock point....I seriously, seriously doubt the Asus 86U is the chockpoint.    I also doubt it's my laptop and I've tried two different Cat5e cables.

I will not be doing any tweaks in my computer or routers settings as I don't want to break anything as this 1000/1000 upgrade is only for one day.....then I'm back to my 200/50 plan.

Below tests below done around 4pm to 4:45pm Thailand time on this Friday.  The international tests are pretty sad.

Although I said I'm not going to try any tweaks on my routers/computer, "I am going to try completing powering down and back up again both the Huawei and Asus routers....see if that hard reboots helps the download speed."   But I can't do that now since other family members are using the internet and watching AIS TV.

To Bangkok to 4 different test servers...all give basically same results.

With the 1000/1000 bonus activated I get about 850Mbps down and 900Mbps up hardwired to an Asus RT-AC68U router testing to a speed test server in Thailand. That's cool in a way but there's nothing that I do on the internet that that consumes that much bandwidth except speed tests.

Well, my upload speeds have increased, but I cant over ~200Mb down.

As for TestMy.net:

this result

@Pib I've always thought that your results are not representative of AIS in general, and that for some reason you have probably one of the better connections via AIS. I can max out my connection with multi-threaded downloads (I use a lot of Usenet), but can never get anything even close to your results with regular single-threaded applications. I'm on their 200Mb plan. Based in Phuket.

Edit: My router is from FiberHome Communications. My guess is that it wasn't produced to do gigabit connections.

What make & model is the "AIS-provided" router that is set to bridge mode feeding your Asus 68U as the 68U does not have an fiber optics input?

I did get a chance to do a hard reboot of my AIS provided router in bridge mode and my Asus 86U hooked to it to see if that helped...it did not help with the speeds....same-same as the tests I reported earlier.

Looked up the specs for my Huawei 8245 and it can easily handle an incoming 1000/1000 plan....at least its "front end input/output circuitry" can....see below....and not to be confused with its 1Gb ethernet ports.

And my Asus 86U is like an upgraded/3-5 year newer Asus 68U which suzannegoh uses I'm going to assume it's not the chokepoint.

I'm going to assume it's also not my laptop with its gigabit ethernet ports since it does approach 1Gb on the upload speed.

Since my download speed seems to be throttled at around 300Mb based on my results and previous comparison with actually being on a 300Mb plan, I going to guess it has something to do with on the AIS end and not my end (equipment within in my home).

Just spoke with AIS. My AIS router is indeed unable to handle 1Gb speeds, which makes sending a 1-day offer of 1Gb Internet pretty useless. Not a great way to get customers to sign up for these packages IMO. But TIT...

What is your router make and model?

What AIS router do you have, and where are you located?

I am in Chiang Mai.  The AIS-supplied router/modem is a ZTE F660.  I plug an Asus RT-AC68U into the ZTE but both are configured as routers rather than bridges so it’s a double NAT environment.  I don’t know whether the double NAT speeds things up or slows them down.  Below are speed test results to various cities that I did while the 1000/1000 trial was activated.  I won’t be able to do further tests until next month when I pay my bill.

Yea, not a basic specs/issue with my Asus 86U as this www.smallbuilder.com test shows it pulls

938 download and 941 upload.  This approx 300Mb download limitation I'm seeing on the 1 day 1000Mb plan is probably an issue on the AIS server end or maybe it's my AIS-provide router set to bridge mode feeding my 86U.   Just guessing on my part.

I do agree with RedCardinal's comment about offering a 1 day upgrade and getting crappy results and absolutely turn some people off, especially if they don't do like RedCardinal did in calling AIS and them telling him his AIS router can't handle a 1000Mb speed plan.   But with saying that I expect I'm sure AIS knows that but also assume it will indeed get some people to upgrade especially when their 1 day speed results are very good like suzannegoh's results.

However, even if I was pulling close to 1000/1000 speed using an ethernet connection I simply would not upgrade at its current cost since most of my home connections are via Wifi which can't come anywhere close to matching ethernet connection speeds.

Suzannegoh's results for international speeds for Tokyo and Miami are no better than a much lower speed plan.   When I did international testing when I was on the 300/300 freebie a couple of times it just gave me hair better international speeds than my 200/50 plan.   But  suzannegoh is getting really good speed to Singapore where a lot of sites are mirrored.

The ZTE F660 router has basically the same input circuitry specs as my Huawei 8245...but that don't mean the rest of it's circuity and "firmware" can or are setup properly for a 1Gb plan.   I just don't know.  I just find it odd the download speed I'm getting on the 1000/1000 one day freebie is basically the same as I got on a couple of 300/300 one day freebies....that is around 330Mb download speed.  Makes me think my 1 day freebie is really a 300/1000 plan.

Another configuration detail is that I'm using TomatoUSB firmware on my Asus RT-AC68U router instead of the stock firmware, though I don;t know if that makes a difference.

The result on the list that surprised me was the speeds to Colombo.  I didn't know that they had modern infrastructure in Sri Lanka.  The results to Japan and the US are indeed not much different than what the cheaper 200/100 package gives though I don't know if that's representative of what you'd get with if you were paying for the 1 Gbps service. It's somewhat possible that AIS might be giving paid subscribers higher priority on international routes.

FWIW, True Online has a 1 Gbps service for 1,599/month.

On Thai social media there are mentions of "data-only" versions at promotional prices for 999 and 1,299, depending on your status level with True. YMMV.

Speedtests (reliable) range from ~ 500 Mbps to close to 1Gbps. I've seen Nperf tests first-hand in the 950 range.

http://trueonline.truecorp.co.th/package

There have been a few 1 Gbps threads here over the last year or so.

On a Windows PC one can use Task Manager, Performance, Ethernet to get a feel for "real world" throughput.

The True 1 GBPS 1,599 package has been around for ~ 4 months and neither AIS nor 3BB has matched it.

Based on a quick scan of Thai social media, there is a fair amount of disparity between expectation and reality with 1 Gbps service. Obviously, a decent router is required, and not all customer end-points/devices support throughput approaching 1 Gbps.

I think the standard True routers (e.g. Huawei 8247H and ZTE F668) can support 1 Gbps on a wired connection, but not on a WLAN connection. You'll need a higher end secondary WLAN AP 2.4 and 5 GHz; they offer a free WLAN AP option and a paid WLAN AP option, but also recommend a device like the D-Link DIR895-L, which they say supports "up to 850 Mbps".

The extra special 1 Gbps promotions from True come via SMS if you are a TrueMove H customer. I'm not sure if those are targeting new or existing broadband customers. The 999 price is stand-alone, while the 1,299 price includes mobile data and TV, my guess is that the price is for the first year, but who knows for sure.

For the bundled TV (1,599), the set-top box is extra.

TrueMove H customers can call 1242 to inquire.

WiFi being a bottleneck is a big part of the reason that i’m not very interested in gigabit internet yet. Maybe if there were dozens of users on your network it would be possible to use that much bandwidth but until 802.11ax becomes common place no one user is going to be able to consume that much bandwidth over wifi. And even then i’m not sure what i’d use all that bandwidth for.

Ever seen "Service not available" when using True?  That's their proxy not being able to keep up with requests.
