Thai Turkeys

Featured Replies

I hear that Makro had frozen local turkeys in stock yesterday.  In the continuing absence of imported birds I may have to buy one this year.

Anyone here tried Thai Turkey recently and if so how was it?

Not recently but a couple of years ago.  It had a vague off taste and was very dry...very little fat content; a 3 1/2 kg bird left hardly enough drippings for gravy.

That doesn't sound too encouraging ????

Thai turkeys are like Thai beef...

edible, but nothing to write home about.

I agree that past local turkeys were as described herein.  However, this year we purchased a local (My Choice) turkey from Tops and while

it was a bit thin in the breast meat, it was tasty and produced good gravy.  I don't know the source but was happy with the result.

Before the embargo on US turkey, Foodland sold NORBEST frozen birds at a reasonable price.  They continued to sell whatever they had left of that pre-embargo stock over the next few holiday seasons at very high prices: I recall seeing a 5kg bird at around B3000.

They may be importing them again and they are a very decent product but take a close look at the tag to ascertain the stock date before buying.

At one time, there were a number of poultry farms in Thailand tying to raise turkeys on a large scale but finding breeds that could handle Thailand's intense heat waves was difficult.  The devastating bird flu epidemic in the mid-aughts whipped out every flock as Thailand and other countries slaughtered almost all poultry trying to contain the disease.  I remember that for more than a year, chicken and duck as well as eggs were unavailable in markets and restaurants here.

Villa Market stocked them last year. But at 4,000 baht a piece I opted for the chicken corner instead.
