Rubber producers ask Govt to extend “Shop for the Nation” campaign

BANGKOK, 8th December 2018 (NNT) – Rubber producers have called on the government to prolong the “Shop for the Nation” campaign to boost sales of rubber-based products. 

Speaking after his meeting with representatives of the rubber industry on Friday, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Grisada Boonrach said rubber entrepreneurs, growers, and tappers are asking the government to extend the “Shop for the Nation” campaign which will come to an end on January 16th next year for another 3-6 months, saying the country has already seen an increase in the sale of natural latex by 2,000 tons as a result of the campaign, which is equivalent to the total amount of latex sold since January this year. Should the campaign continue, they believe it will absorb up to 7,000 tons of latex now in the market. 

Under the Shop for the Nation campaign which seeks to boost year-end spending, purchases of rubber tires between December 15th, 2017 and January 16th, 2018 are tax deductible. 

The representatives also proposed that governmental agencies buy rubber-based products such as pillows, mattresses, and CPR mannequins for hospitals, pointing out that assistance from state agencies would relieve the oversupply of rubber by 200,000 tons. 

Grisada said a committee will be appointed to review the proposal while the proposed extension of the Shop for the Nation campaign will be presented to next week’s cabinet meeting.

These government schemes really do work wonders

All I know it rubber prices are down and the latex foam pillows sold everywhere are extremely expensive. So you have cheap labor and cheap raw material costs but still the same high product cost. There must be huge profits in selling those pillows.

Yep.

As another post stated today, the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer, profits are not being cascaded back down to all in a fair & equal manner!

Condom sales are all time high, 7-11 plastic bags are down.

The Prayut government has been using its rubber buffer stock program that pays rubber farmers above-market prices, albeit nowhere near the price farmers claim they need for sustained farming.

The problem - there are about 24 million rai (3.8 million hectares) of rubber plantations in the country that produced about 4 million tonnes in rubber yields yearly. If the rubber output comes down to just below 4 million tonnes, prices will increase. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30355842 

Farmers need to reduce their annual production for higher prices but it seems intuitive that the government's rubber buffer stock program and various government schemes to create artificial domestic demand using government (subsidies) and private (ie., tax-deductions) incentives just encourages farmers to maintain, if not increase, annual production.

Election time is here. The government (junta) has control of the taxpayer purse strings and it might count for many rubber votes if the government could could see their way clear to extend the campaign. 

No worries! The PM will probably make an announcement in the next few days.

When the rubber producers could be 'convinced' by some authority to produce better quality rubber mats, say of a same level as in Malaysia or Indonesia, to stay close to Thailand, instead of playing stupid, greedy, shortlived 'games' with chemicals, maybe Thai rubber would sell more easily.

Just an idea, you know, not that I'm a latex specialist, but a couple of, non-Thai, friends who are told me a thing or two about the ongoing fraud here, the reason why some main rubber purchasers reject the Thai stuff, after suffering important industrial losses with it.
