A standoff between a suicidal schoolgirl and her father, teachers and emergency workers ended after hours of tense drama at a Samut Sakhon school on Tuesday night when she was plucked to safety.

The Krathumban district emergency response unit was called at 7.30pm after the ninth grader was seen walking back and forth on a ledge on the fourth floor of her school.

She was carrying a razor and crying out in pain as she used it to slash her arm.

Officials from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, Karn Kusol Samut Sakhon Foundation and Rai Khing Municipality set up a large air cushion below the ledge out of fear the girl would jump or fall off the narrow ledge.

The girl's father and a teacher spent about two hours talking to the girl and trying to coax her back inside. When that effort failed, a teacher and a rescue official finally rushed to grab her and then pulled her back inside.

In doing so, both received cuts from the razor and were sent to the Krathumban district hospital for treatment. The girl is receiving care at the same hospital.

The mother of the girl said her daughter had felt abandoned and become depressed after her eldest sister had left the room they rented together and gone to work in Nakhon Ratchasima two weeks ago.

The charity Samaritans is available around the clock for people who want to talk.

If you or anyone you know is in need of mental health services, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand at their 24-hour hotline 02-713-6791 (English), 02713-6793 (Thai) or Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai).

The outcome was positive for a change well done all involved????

Sounds like the girl was deranged. Slashing out with a razor blade, wonder if she was on drugs?

Family dysfunction, no-one knowing what's actually going on with other members!

It’s a crying shame that she chose to do this. Harming and threatening to kill one’s self in that manner is quite often a cry for help and a need for attention.

It’s a pity she didn’t receive that attention and support while she was feeling isolated and depressed.

Good on the teacher and the rescue worker who obviously put themselves at risk to help this poor lass.

Unfortunately the infrastructure for helping students in schools in Thailand is next to nonexistent. The admin believe that because they are all powerful all they need to do is talk gently to the children and all will be well. There is no system in place here to recognize, or help students in difficulty.

There are more and more children with mental health issues in schools and no one there to help them. As a foreigner it is quite difficult to deal with these problems and we get the blame if we don't know how to take care of these kids. Things are getting more and more worrisome here as the years go by...

Poor girl... no one there to understand her real problems!
