1year ban over. Now what?

Featured Replies

I lost my passport last year and being a South African it takes months to get a new passport, so I went onto overstay by 111 days.

I exited Thailand last year in December and my 1 year ban was up about a week ago.

I want to go back to visit my son for Christmas, I just want some information on what happens now.

I was planning on flying into DMK and getting a tourist visa in the evening and taking a bus to our village.  I have proof of funds, I can take cash with me, and I also have a letter confirming employment and my salary from my international school, as well as my work permit in that country.

Is that enough or should I go to Savannakhet or Vientiane to get a Non-O?

Should I check with the local embassy to ensure I am off the list or perhaps get a document to show the airline in case I am refused by their systems?

I am looking to go back for 2 1/2 weeks over the Christmas break and then head back to finish off my contract.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If I were you I'd contact immigration directly by phone and see what they say about it.

If you can, get a visa before flying to Thailand. Regardless of your previous overstay and blacklisting, that attracts less scrutiny.

I am surprised that South Africa could not supply you with an emergency travel certificate. This link suggests it should have been possible: http://www.southafrica-newyork.net/homeaffairs/pp_emergency.htm. Out of curiosity, did you try to get one?

OP the reason for overstay is your own and all history now. But out of interest just in case I run into a sth African who has lost his pp, I tell him it will take months for a replacement? I got a emergency one from au in days. Funny thing was my new pp arrive along with the temporary one. From memory 6 working days.

As far as I know the one in New York is one of the last ones that still do emergency passports.

They stopped it in Bangkok in 2013 I believe, so yes, it takes about 6 months.

I expedited mine by getting DHL involved and it still took over 90 days.

Provided you get an entry visa into Thailand from the Thai consulate or embassy in Sth Africa, all will be forgiven.

You have paid the penalty and provided your funds and paper work is in order, you will be almost welcomed.

You nhave a child here, it will not be a problem if you have the right documents that Thai embassy can advise you on.

Good luck

I would get a Non-O to visit your son from the Thai Consulate in S.A., which would be the most acceptable to immigration.  Keep a handy copy of his birth certificate and/or any docs proving you are the father, to show immigration if asked.  And also, verify they removed the blacklisting from the system the airlines use to get clearance for you, or you might not be able to board your flight.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I flew in and had no problems, not even a little. Thanks.
