Student heroes help save the life of a suicidal Chinese man

Thai social media was full of praise for a group of senior school pupils who helped save the life of a young Chinese man who was threatening to jump from Taksin bridge in Bangkok. 

 

The students - from Wat Sutthiworaram school - had been busking by the bridge when the Chinese man passed two times. 

 

He had tried to put a 1,000 yuan and a 500 yuan note in their hat which the boys thought strange and wanted to give back because it was too much. 

 

Then he tried to give them his phone, said a representative of the group Sitthichart Maliwan who is in the last year of secondary. "He said 'who cares'? He wouldn't be needing that now". 

 

Sitthichart explained that after this the man, aged about 30, was threatening to throw himself off the bridge. Himself and his mates, nine in total, went to talk him down. 

 

Utilizing Mandarin skills learnt since kindergarten Sittichart and his pals were successful in helping the Chinese man until police and other authorities arrived. 

 

Cops said the man had made an earlier attempt at suicide during the day but after calming down he was allowed to leave the Kannayao police station. 

 

The second attempt occurred about 9pm when the boys helped out. 

 

Daily News were full of praise saying "you don't need to be an adult to be a hero. If you have goodness in your heart". 

 

Netizens agreed and heaped praise on the Thai students for their actions.

The largest bill in China is the 100RMB note.  They might have been Hong Kong Dollars.   In some cities, cash is used less and less. 

 

Smart good, kids.  Their parents ought to be very proud of them.

In Thailand, they lower the bar to qualify for the word “heroes” just like they lower the bar for the word “luxury condominium”.

You are certainly missing something: many human beings would not go out of their way to help a person in distress; would  not inconvenience themselves help save a drowning person; would not stop to help a motorist who has broken down. If you have been in Thailand for long you must know that most Thai people would not go out of their way to protect you or save you - they would rather take pictures of you getting beaten or robbed or dying in a fire than put themselves in danger for your greater good. They never have and never will think of getting out of the way when a ambulance is trying to get past to get you in an emergency.

The fact that these boys - who had some special training - did take the trouble to engage with a distressed foreign man and prevent his suicide - though it was not brave or heroic, it was human - is a remarkable thing and deserves recognition.

Glad there are more good on this planet than bad. Great effort and job kids. When it comes time to act some will, some won’t, some will be lifted up by hearing about their actions, some don’t care, and some will diminish or criticize the efforts of those that acted. Depending on what world you like and feel most comfortable determines your responses and emotions. Peace to the man and these great kids.
