PHUKET: The Acting Chief of the Phuket Marine Office, Wiwat Chitchertwong, was silent yesterday (Dec 18) on questions about marine officials being prosecuted for dereliction of duty for allowing the tour boat Phoenix to put to sea, in the wake of the investigation into the Phoenix sinking on July 5, killing 67 Chinese tourists.

Although it has already been confirmed that other boats also built in Phuket have the same design as the Phoenix, Mr Wiwat yesterday assured that no boats with illegal ‘substandard’ designs were still operating among the Phuket tour boat fleet.

Mr Wiwat’s reaction followed Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Surachate Hakparn on Monday (Dec 17) publicly revealing that the Phoenix was substandard and illegally approved, and that officials and others connected with the July 5 tragedy will lose their jobs.

Bearing in mind his position one would hope so.  Acting Chief of the Phuket Marine Office.

He (or his people) would only know if there was a comprehensive register of vessels that included details of date and place of construction, specifications, equipment (engines etc) and inspection history. I rather suspect there is no such register. Even if there is, how on earth did such a dreadful vessel get included in the first place? (Rhetorical question). If there isn't, then they would be clueless as to whether there were similar lethal lash-ups around.

“We inspected more than 1,000 boats operating from ports (and piers) in Phuket after the July 5 disaster."

Shouldn't that have been done before the disaster, rather than after? You know, to save lives rather than count the dead. Didn't anyone ask why it wasn't done before? Of course not. You can't challenge anyone in uniform, even when they refuse to answer legitimate questions such as how many have been found unseaworthy since, or if any Marine Office officials were involved in certifying the Phoenix.

So that answers my question from a previous post about the connected and their tour boats.

Still operating, no questions asked!

Nonsense, all boats have been checked by 3 different agencies, many have been forced to make improvements.

"that friends is a recipe for disaster" - yes, and that is Phuket.  Maximum money in, for minimum money out, with safety usually the short cut.
