Swiss man arrested for allegedly extorting compatriot

Phuket - Police arrested a Swiss man here for allegedly extorting a fellow countryman who owns a resort on Lanta Island in Krabi.

An undercover police arrested Calos Mininit at 9 pm Monday night when the resort owner met him to give him money as demanded.

The resort owner had alerted police that Minnig had been demanding protection fee from him and asked him to deliver him a sum in Phuket at 8 pm.

The undercover policeman then disguised as a taxi driver and arrested Minnig at the scene.

The resort owner, who has a Thai wife, told police that Minnig claimed to be a Interpol officer and threatened to harm his family if he refused to give him the protection fee.

:o He should be deported and a black mark put in his passport... we don't need farang extorting protection money here. Enough of that already.

Hey, why not extort from others. It looks so easy and it's done so often. I guess the involvement by the police means it is one of those occupations that is restricted to Thais only!

Did the resort owner have something to hide. Why else would he give money to an "Interpol' officer?
