Thai PM welcomes 2019, sees it as important year for Thailand

BANGKOK, 26th December 2018 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has cited 2019 as another very important year for Thailand. In addition to the elections which will lead to sustainable democracy, Thailand will have an important role in advancing the ASEAN Community. 

As ASEAN Chair in 2019, he said, Thailand will open its home to welcome leaders and foreign dignitaries, including ASEAN friends and ASEAN’s dialogue partners. Thailand will host over 180 meetings, in both major and secondary towns. 

Gen Prayut invited all Thais to join hands as good hosts for smooth and successful meetings for the pride of the nation, and to fulfill the expectations of the international community. 

He stressed that ASEAN’s success depends on a partnership of all sectors, working to promote and advance the ASEAN Community in a sustainable manner. 

Over 50 years ago, ASEAN was born in Thailand, he noted, adding that ASEAN has a population of six hundred million people and is the sixth largest economy in the world. It has played a constructive role and is well-received by the global community. Hence, the opportunity to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship is an important duty, an honor for Thailand and the Thai people. 

The Prime Minister congratulated Khemphong Rungsawang and Chayuta Homhnug, the designers of the logo Thailand will use during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2019. The logo is inspired by flower garlands which are a Thai symbol of welcome. In addition, the beautiful flower arrangement represents the ASEAN Community’s unity, cooperation, and support for each other.

Pretty well the most honest, true and correct thing that he's said in 5 years. And, as for the ASEAN chair, if even the sweetest talking questioner asked him his views on the way forward for ASEAN and how Thailand might contribute to this, he'd start crying and shout "Porky, you were right . . . they are asking unfair questions again."

All I hope is that he doesn't stuff up the big responsibility he has and bring shame and on the Country and embarrassment to it's people. He is inclined to be a loose cannon sometimes so I hope he has his minders are on hand to keep him well advised and his mind on the job.

It will be the year, that you, Mr. Prayuth exit stage left, lose your power, lose the election, and disappear into oblivion, never to be remembered again, by a single person in this nation. You will be forgotten so fast, you will marvel at how incredibly irrelevant you will become overnight.

The ASEAN dates are set for June 22 & 23, later than normal and especially to allow for Thailand possibly needing time for a new govt to be formed. The chair will surely pass to the new PM which, on grounds of common decency, cannot be Prayuth. So mae pen rai, my chocolatey pal, the Chairing will pass respectably.

Still going on about the logo, there is more to the job than that. It requires diplomacy, tact and intelligence. Oh well Thailand will continue to be a laughing stock.

I also believe the election has a foregone conclusion and I just hope blood is not spilled over it or in later events down the road.

And I feared I was becoming paranoid in my loathing of this cretin. A few million more like-minded souls - Thais, obviously - and we might just be dancing in two months time. I actually dream - I've had more than two of them! - of seeing this apology for humanity slithering his way out of Government House, dragging trailer-loads of redundant blouses behind him.

I find every year is important too.  I hope to live it out, unlike many people, and look forward to another one.

Visions of Tuk Tuk drivers offering 20 Baht tours of the city come to mind.  Thais are welcoming.  That is why people come here.  The government is not all that welcoming.

You appear to be saying that those with Western perspectives should not attempt to impose them on non Western cultures.

Why not say so simply?

However ignoring your dreadful prose style, there is a fallacy at the heart of your argument.While accepting cultural differences, many Western values are in fact universal values which by accident of history first took root in a Western Europe and its outposts.

ASEAN meetings where all the leaders sit around laughing at all the human rights they've abused, elections they've rigged, drug addicted citizens they've killed, money they've laundered, prisoners they've executed, citizens they've made stateless, the amount of Muslims they've killed, awards they've been stripped of for failure to protect their people, watches bought, etc.
