A top security official said today that southern militants might try to expand their terrorism activities outside the three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.

National Security Council secretary-general Gen Wallop Raksanoh said today  wcthat the two home-made bombs used to attack the Golden Mermaid sculpture and the Noo-Maew statue on the Samila beach on Wednesday night were similar to the type of explosive devices usually used by southern militants in the deep South.

He suspected that the militants might have been hired by some political elements to stage the bomb attacks to incite unrest in the southern region beyond the boundaries of the three southernmost provinces.

Yesterday Maj Gen Chatuphon Kalamphasut, Deputy Chief of the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4, said Police were still unsure who was responsible for the attacks in Songkla. Although some activities by insurgent groups in Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani and four border districts of Songkhla were previously detected in Songkhla, there was no evidence to suggest they perpetrated the bombings, he said.

Today National Security Council Secretary-General Gen Wallop Raksanoh said that the two home-made bombs used to attack the Golden Mermaid sculpture and the Noo-Maew statue on the Samila beach on Wednesday night were similar to the type of explosive devices usually used by Southern-Militants in the deep South.

Seen the number of Iranian "tourists" flocking to Thailand, anything can BE expected.

Iran = Shia.

Southern Thai Muslims (and their kin population of Malaysia, where the practice of Shia Islam rituals in groups is banned) = Sunni.

Why would Iran want to aid a purely Sunni "orientated" objective which would increase and strengthen the consolidation of Sunni Islam in SE Asia (Indonesia also Sunni).

Although war has made strange bedfellows of Iran and the Sunni Taliban (who they support in order to forestall the further growth of the Islamic State in Afghanistan) and Iran and Sunni Hamas (who they support against Israel) they have no interest in supporting the insurgency in Thailand.

It does not further any cause or objective that their strategy seeks to achieve ie: weakening of Israel, US, Saudi Arabia (Sunni and their most hated enemy) or Islamic State.

And so it begins....starting to hedge their bets in case they need to pull the security excuse in the event that they have miscalculated their chances of winning the upcoming election.

Pipe bombs aimed at a mermaids tail as a terrorist attack?? Really??? More like a feasible excuse if needed whilst still being in a part of Thailand so unvisited that it won’t affect the Chinese tourist sentiment.

Yes, Bowerboy, that is exactly what I thought: stoking up excuses for a possible delay of the 'election'. All grist to their mill. All amateur dramatics (mermaids' tails indeed!). And note: the 'terrorist attack' coincided with lovable Prawit's visit precisely to the Mermaid's home - Songkhla!
