Curtain comes down on the iconic Dusit Thani

Forty-eight years after it first opened to tourists from around the globe, the iconic Dusit Thani Bangkok on Saturday closed its doors with a tearful farewell by its staff and loyal guests.

 

In collaboration with Central Pattana, the hotel’s owners – Dusit International – have planned a sprawling amalgam of residences, retail zones and office spaces along with Mark II of the hotel.

 

Some architectural parts will be preserved for use in the new hotel, then the original structure will tumble floor by floor to make way for a Bt36.7-billion mixed-use project – a new hotel included – that will open in 2023.

Yuk !!

48 years is quite extreme in Bangkok terms. Considering that many of the condos built 10 years ago are due for the wrecking ball.

40 years. Most posters on here are almost twice that age !

That's the biggest issue in Thailand.

 

I see many several decades old buildings in Bangkok still in good condition, but I see very few 1 decade old buildings in good condition

I am not 80 yet, close @ 78 but still a couple years to go. 40 year old shorts? I hope you're talking about walking shorts, not undershorts.

The hotel was well past its prime 15  years ago. It needed a major retrofit and  replacement of facilities. The dining was excellent, but walking through the place with its photos of  celebrities from the 60s was depressing. It makes sense to put the prime location to better use.

There is a hotel in Udorn that is older than 40 years.  I think it was old when I was there in 1972. 

 

And of course, make no mistake, tourism is booming in Bangkok
