A life in the UK is worth about £13,000 to dependants should it be proved in court that the death was due to negligence or worse.If the deceased was a breadwinner supporting those dependants a much larger sum based on the value of that support to the dependants would also be awarded. But negligence must be proved. A successful criminal prosecution would satisfy that test. A claimant has 3 years to bring the claim.

What keeps any of the victim's families from suing in court?  

 

Accepting 30k is what.  I'm sure no one tells them that acceptance of the pittance wipes out their ability to sue.
