These stories come so frequent I'm starting to think, am I the only foreigner not carrying around hundreds of thousands in my bag where ever I go? ????

Maybe that is why tourists have to show THB 20,000 on entry, so that they have enough money to leave in a taxi/7-11/local shop

I find it very strange that these type of cases all seem to have the same script.

1. Farang loses money (always a farang)

2. Honest Thai finds money and takes it to the local trustee police station (always an honest Thai and usually a taxi driver).

3. Farang turns up and thanks the honest Thai and tells the world how good & honest Thai people are ("How wonderful are the Thai people to tourists").

4. Reporter who happens to be at the same police station just at the right time reports the story.

You couldn't make this stuff up, could you? ????

That does it!

I'm going to call all taxi companies I can think of, every day, telling them I left my money in the back of a taxi.

This time next year we'll be millionaires Rodney.

Years ago, one waiter run behind me for 200 meters from the restaurant where i've been eating, to return my forgotten camera.

I wanted to give him 500 B. , but he refused the tip.

I've experienced many Thais who were honest and incredibly helpful, and only know one Thai that is completely untrustworthy where money is concerned.  On the other hand, some friends have not been as lucky.

One (relatively large) mom and pop type supermarket that I used to use regularly, told me on my next visit that I had been inadvertently over-charged by a couple of hundred bht, and so refunded my over-payment.  I've no doubt that some poster will be along soon to point out that I was stupid not to have noticed the over-payment, and of course they're right - but not all of us count every bht of our purchases....

Another time, an Indian restaurant owner saw me shopping at Makro - and chased me to tell me that I'd inadvertently been overcharged  by around 300 bht the last time I was there!

When it comes to Thais going out of their way to help - I've even more examples ????.

I'm not a Thai apologiser or hater, as I know there are good and bad in all countries, and so far, I've been very fortunate in nearly always encountering the former ????.

After the minivan driver I arranged to with the hotel to pick me up from the airport. ( I have always had problems with taxi drivers ) went throgh my luggage and stole my wallet containing cash in various currencies. Reporting it. Viewing the Airoprt video that clearly showed the driver leaning into the in the back of the van for an inordinate amount of time the police would do nothing. No love or trust here. Nor ever will be. Learned my lesson. In the LOS= Land of scams

Wallets should be kept in pockets.

Hey, that could be a new slogan!!!!!!

Makes you wonder is there a " collusion" with TAT and Thai image  seeing tourism has collapsed .To set up a new story on happy outcomes. They have worn out the taxi driver returning goods story.

Meanwhile, yesterday morning a little German man was in panic mode as his bag with his passport and money was stolen on the beach. He was running all over the place. The police came and he told them he thinks it was a European man and woman who had been eyeing him. This was  at high tide, really high tide at 10am with few people on the beach.  We saw him running back and forth, agitated.

The point being is that alot of foreigners, especially older males, lose track of their environment and common sense when they are on holiday. And, some of the worst offenders, are farangs stealing from other farangs. (And btw, this idiot had decided to surf when their was a strong rip current and red flags were up at the big hotels like Mariott and centara, that were visible.)

She did not return 1M baht....she returned 20k and should have gotten 10% reward...

So had she tried to withdrawal the money from the bank book, is that not a crime in thailand? The book book replacent cost is like 500baht...the money never left the bank...

but the story sounds good...the Thai culture does have a dishonest image problem so these stories are perceived to cancel out much bigger stories like the guy who killed his peer b/c he didn’t want to rip off their boss...

Thai Rath reported on yet another story showcasing the honesty of Thai people and their desire to promote tourism to the kingdom.

They screamed in their opening paragraphs that "Aunty Porn" - a food seller in Chumpon - had returned a million baht to an Italian tourist.

In reality the black bag she found in her restaurant by the train station in the southern Thai city contained euros and dollars amounting to 20,000 baht. But there was a Thai bank book with a deposit in excess of a million.

Or, in actual reality, Thai Rath didn't scream that she had returned a million baht to the Italian, the reference to a million was in quotes each time it was mentioned.  There's a world of difference.

Other nationalities have worse reputation, but what do you think would have been the right amount ?

I know for experience that it's hard for honest people to accept rewards for what they consider very normal.

Considering it was all his cards and the rest, at least 5 000-10 000

"A Thai Rath reporter just happened to be at the police station . . . "

How convenient  ????

Maybe it's part of their duty to hang out for hours with the cops in hope to be rewarded with a honest Thai story, and get appreciation points from the TAT in the annual honest reporter competition.

"I was concerned about the image of us Thais in the eyes of tourists".

Right. Got that, of course you were. All Thais are concerned about their 'image' that's why they're so honest and upright. And why they wouldn't dream of hurting or stealing from people, just check the newspapers, you'll see how honest Thais are.

It's not that incredible, do you think there are inconsistencies ?

True or BS is irrelevant; the reality is most will see it as a BS attempt to make us all believe the honesty is real

He obviously hasn't visited a National Park yet !

It took just one post - can’t we just drop that old chestnut - go to the Taj - when I visited 20 rupees for locals 1000 rupees for foreigners .

It’s totally pathetic- sense of entitlement-if you are so furious - don’t go to national parks ( key word is national ie Thai)
