Pickpockets: You have to catch them in the act otherwise we have no chance, police

The Thai police told Thai Rath that catching pickpockets was almost impossible unless they were caught in the act.

And if they had no criminal record the chances of an arrest were very low.

And it was virtually impossible if the pickpocket team was foreign.

The comments came at the end of a story about an air hostess who posted CCTV from a clothes shop on Facebook.

"Amy Raiwin Pisitkulpakdee" had her phone lifted why she was browsing for clothes at a shop in a department store.

Thai Rath said that the CCTV footage she gave to the police showed a team of three people. Two women lifted the phone and provided cover with a clothing item while a man was waiting nearby presumably to take deliver of the stolen item.

The thieves were described as a "professional" team who did this for a living.

The CCTV from outside the shop in the shopping center itself was inconclusive as to the movements of the thieves thereafter - it was pointing in the wrong direction to be any use.

Police told Thai Rath that such thieves needed to be caught red handed to make a case stick. If they had no record or were foreigners it was virtually impossible to find them.

Of course, then it saves them time from acrually investigating the crime. Otherwise they would have to look at CCTV, talk to witnesses and more.

There is no such thing as proactive policing here, the police seem to think it is their job to sit by the phone waiting for it to ring 0r detect moving traffic violations by stopping the traffic at a road stop ????

They just simply have no clue

Maybe if they are aware of pickpockets in a certain area then send in plain clothes officers to catch them...……..……...maybe too much like work

No chance to extort our cut...?

Interesting on the video of the ladyboys lifting the guys wallet in Hua Hin i think it was one clearly removed the money, left it on the bench and another collected it,and they then returned his wallet a small mercy i guess, but profesionals no doubt.

Note to self. Next time I need some money round up a foreign pickpocket team!????????????

My mate’s missus told me she had her phone snatched from her bag. She told the nearest police in their booth. She told me as she was telling the officer, she knew he wasn’t listening properly. When she finished telling him, his first question was, You have a farang boyfriend. Why doesn’t he buy you Luis Vuitton bag?”

She was physically angry as she was telling me. Asking me why the police officer in question was so incompetent. If you think foreigners here give the local police a lot of stick, have a chat with a local who’s had to deal with them.

Yes, that pesky police work would be far too much. The envelope required to get any police work done would be more expensive than replacing the stolen items.
