Crossy
Where do you intend applying? Some consulates need nothing, others want $$$.

ubonjoe
At some embassies and consulate you need to show the equivalent of 20k baht. Not sure what number is wanted at Penang but showing more than the equivalent of 20k baht it will be accepted. 1

Lovethailandelite
I should of added too the above that the agents in Penang say to carry a bank statement showing at least 20,000 baht as they frequently ask for it. Also, if you intend to use the Southern land border crossings, be sure to carry a minimum of 20,000 baht or cash equivalent.

At others, they want every item every time. And at Vientiane, they don't want anything except to see you don't have a "remark stamp" on a prior tourist visa (from them or anywhere else).
