May 25, 200422 yr Hi, I need some information in regards to marriages in Sweden. I have lived and worked in Thailand for the last 5 years (proper visa and work permit), and have been together with my fiancée for close to 6 years. We would now like to get married, but don’t wish to do this in Thailand due to all the laws and restrictions put on the girl. What we would like to do is to travel back to Sweden and get legally married there. We would only be in Sweden for around 2 weeks to visit family etc. My family would act as guarantor to ensure no burdon would be put upon the Swedish Government. My question is how can this be achieved? Is there any special visa we need to apply for? Has anybody had any experience in regards to this? Cheers,

May 25, 200422 yr Your fiancée will need a letter from her home amphur stating that she is not married and can get married. Have it translated in BKK and stamped by the Swedish embassy. Then get a normal tourist visa for Sweden. When you are in Sweden, go to the local tax office and get a "personbevis" and marriage license ("Äktenskapscertifikat"). More info on http://skatteverket.se/folkbokforing/ovrigt/aktenskap.html Then you can go to a priest or anyone else legally allowed to marry you. You can also get married at the Swedish embassy in BKK. Drop them an email and ask for details: [email protected] As for the "laws and restrictions put on the girl", what are you talking about?!? My wife is Thai, I am Swedish. Our marriage is registered in both TH and SE. No restrictions of any kind have been imposed on either me or my wife. On the contrary, it is much easier for me to get 1 year TH visas and much easier for her to get EU and US visas.
May 28, 200422 yr Author Hi Guys, Thanks for all the help. Firstly, as for my comment in regards to laws and restrictions, what I meant was that if we get married legally in Thailand she would loose her right to own land. As I am a foreigner (i.e. not allowed to own land) we would be in a situation whereby no house/land could be owned. I may however be incorrect in regards to this, so please let me know. I know that the Swedish Embassy do perform wedding cermonies, but we would like to conduct the wedding in Sweden during our holiday. ka12345 - thanks a lot for the info. This is all I need to know. Cheers, Tompa

You are wrong. There was a policy in effect that made it appear this way until the last few years but it has never been a law. They policy was changed and now the only additional requirement she will have is to sign a form that the money is hers (not joint marriage property) and you agree that you are aware you can not inherit it. She can still own/buy/transfer property married to you.
May 28, 200422 yr Author lopburi3 - thanks for the update. Great to know that there are no restrictions placed upon the girl in case of marriage. We have planned to perform the cermony in Sweden, so we will go ahead with this. Cheers, Tompa

Sweden is hard to deal with regarding visas!
