Cambodian PM Hun Sen calls on military to 'destroy' opponents

PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia's strongman premier Hun Sen on Thursday (Jan 24) called on his country's military to "destroy" opponents if the government comes under threat, in a tirade in which he described himself as the "the one who steers the wheel" of the army.

 

"Some people say Hun Sen is consolidating power... that is very correct," he said in a speech to soldiers marking the 20th anniversary of the infantry - which is headed by his son Hun Manet.

 

The 66-year-old premier has in recent weeks turned up the rhetoric against the now-dissolved opposition party, the European Union and other critics of his government.

Not unusual for this madman despot serial killer. Never forget the history of this dictator, posing as a democratically elected leaded. He was a commander with the Kymer Rouge. Sometimes, history must never be forgotten. Hun Sen would do anything to further his own interests, and keep the ridiculously lucrative gravy train going.

What's the bet that Trump 'admires his strong leadership style' and will invite him for a few meetings at the White house?

Hun Sen is a typical despotic leader amongst the likes of Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, Mugabe,  etc He will cling to power as he views Cambodia and its wealth as his personal piggy bank. Like all despots before him, he doesn't know when it is time to hand over the reins.

 

The guy is unstable and dangerous and has no intentions of ceding power in his lifetime.

 

He is at present sucking up to the Chinese, he thinks this will balance out any loss of future trade due to tariffs with the West, he is wrong and they will eat him alive. This has not gone down well with his Vietnamese masters who installed him in power before they left. If the EU and USA carry out their threats and withdraw the EBA programmes, times are going to get very tough for the ordinary Cambodian.

No he has no idea where Cambodia actually is, he would think it is in South America.

Some folk this is suitable retirement option instead of Thailand

Mind you they screwed the Oz government out of more than 50 million AUD for taking 8 refugees,

It’s almost like he’s forgotten about him?  It’s possible that Trump doesn’t know about Cambodia, but thinks it’s a fictional place?

Interesting that blame is being placed on a guy who is POTUS for two years. Is this Hun Sen guy a new despot? I think he has been around a lot longer than Trump, probably will be too.

I spent a lot of time there between 2008-2019 on and off but my partner and residence are in Thailand on a retirement extension. I was looking at one point, at business options, which I dropped very quickly because the type of business I do is at saturation point.

 

There is no way I could stay in Cambodia long term, just not enough development or diversity in the landscapes. Sihanoukville is now overrun with Chinese and casinos, built or in the process of being built. The Cambodian locals are complaining they are being pushed out and Chinese crime is getting on top of the resort.

 

The cash cow of Siem Reap is now getting expensive and comparable with prices in big Thai popular resorts areas. However, you only need to get a couple of miles out of the centre and the infrastructure is terrible.

 

Vermin, garbage dumps, open sewers, smelly bad rivers full of filth and a bad smell is everywhere to be found in both Phnom Penn and Siem Reap. The place is VERY GRUBBY!

 

Money just has not been spent outside in the towns and cities and in surrounding areas on developing the infrastructure.

 

Crime is a high especially petty crime with thefts, bag snatchings, violent robberies etc are on the increase. I just don't see it as a retirement place with the very poor healthcare available for the size of the country.

 

Visas are easier and there is not the capital required to be deposited in banks which may encourage those who can no longer afford Thailand but I would choose Vietnam, 100 times over Cambodia to stay on as a retirement place, even though there is a bit of messing around with the visa situation for foreigners.

 

A lot of the police, I found out, in Cambodia go on training courses and seminars to Thailand which probably is why they are corrupt, lousy, arrogant and have no knowledge of the law.

Would he give money to poor backpackers who can't afford to live in Thailand?
