Quick police action from the local Chiang Mai force then immigration led to the capture of a 51 year old Algerian thief who lifted a Canadian tourist's wallet at a pub.

Khelifa Larbi, 51, stole the wallet on Saturday night. It contained 17,000 baht and three cards.

But he was caught on CCTV just 300 meters away using one of the cards in a convenience store in the Sompetch market area at 1.15 am on Sunday.

Alerts to the victim's phone helped seal his fate.

Immigration police were soon able to find the thief where he was staying on Charoen Prathet Road. He had offended in a similar manner before.

Larbi was found with facial foam, facial lotion and two razors that he had bought with the card.

He admitted everything saying that his method of thieving was to dance close to a victim and wait for his opportunity.

He was charged with theft during the hours of darkness and using an electronic card that did not belong to him for the purposes of theft.

I am not so sure about that , this is not the first time he was caught in Chiang Mai .

And he served a longer prison sentence in Indonesia 2 years ago but was released and kicked out of the country in June 2018 . This is a real scumbag.

And from Bali news in 2017  (Google translate):

Since setting foot in Bali in September 2016 until Wednesday (1/18/2017), Khelifa Larbi (48) turned out to be not a traveler but a steal.

The Algerian citizen was recorded by a surveillance camera stealing a bag belonging to a Caucasian. Police arrested Khelifa at a restaurant after stealing in Kuta, Bali. The results of the examination while Khelifa revealed that the members of North Kuta Police Precinct had been stealing in 16 locations and the victims were Caucasian bags.
"Suspects stole 10 to 16 crime scenes. Suspects since last September 2016 here. Only four months in Bali," North Kuta Police Chief Kompol Pius X Febry Aceng Loda said on Wednesday (1/18/2017).
Finally, Khelifa stole bule bags at the Red Carpet Champagne Bar, Jalan Kayu Aya, Kerobokan Klod, North Kuta, Badung and at Char-Char Restaurant, Jalan Kayu Aya, Kerobokan Kelod, North Kuta, Badung, Bali.
"This suspect is targeting foreign nationals who were victims. In his confession only two crime scenes but after we developed it turned out there were dozens of bags in the suspect hotel. Suspects live in the Kuta area in a hotel," he explained.
