"Rent a dowry" - Thais' way to "Keep Face" and "Keep up with the Joneses"

Thai Rath reported that a Thai company had come up with a new idea in these dire economic times.

Thais can now not only pretend to be rich by renting cars to impress guests at weddings.

They can also rent money for the day so they can boast about the size of the dowry.

Families of grooms or the grooms themselves were prepared to pay 20,000 baht to "rent" 300,000 baht for the big day.

To really put down an impressive dowry you could pay 90,000 baht for 2 million.

Now wouldn't that impress the Joneses next door and the wedding guests!

Not just that.

There are special packages of car and dowry.

For example a million baht dowry AND an E250 Mercedes Benz Coupe for the day could be had for just 60,000 baht.

Thai Rath reported that the "new idea" was an extension of second hand car companies that would rent fancy vehicles out to their clients to impress girlfriends and business associates.

It was all a sham designed to create "face".

I remember an English friend of mine got married to a local here at a very nice hotel. His wife's maid of honour was a celebrity. They knew each other but they weren't anything near best friends. This celebrity was in nearly all the pictures and she for the most part was the focus of attention. After dinner had been served and eaten, many guests simply scarpered like rats up a drain pipe. Just close family and foreigners left to enjoy the limited alcohol left as the guests had just taken bottles home with them.

Was a lovely day.

Even the In-Laws at the wedding?

How is this any different from lone sharks?

Holy cr@p  90,000 baht interest for 2 million for one day!!

someone has a nice little earner turn your 2 Mil into  30+ in just one year!!

Could afford a nice little group of gangsters for recovery without cutting too much into the profits..

Well, you can rent a wedding hall, rent a limousine, rent a photographer, rent a wedding dress, heck, many on here regularly rent 'wives'.... so why not rent the sin-sod too? ????

I can't imagine a Canadian woman allowing you to have that!

i have a few friends, not close, but in contact due to facebook, these people are well into their 50s and yet cant stop themselves boasting on social media about how great their lives are.

some of my thai ex-gfs have married foreigners who are willing to spend money on them, again they can't stop boasting.

it's how some people live these days but you can't help think they are making up for inadequacies in other areas of their lives.

Last Thai wedding I attended went on for 3 days and resembled a drinking marathon so you'd need 3 days rental of the Merc' and dosh to cut it .. And an E250 ? C'mon ..

Puts your visa 'agents' into perspective - positve bargain now.

From all the good things there are living here, one thing that really is truly dogger in Thailand, Thai weddings.

Then we have the ''stolen car'' but no TVF member would ever know anything about that...

I wonder how I could 'rent out' Bht 800,000 every weekend for 9 months a year. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

And my Vigo....it's clean and white.   55555

money lenders lend money 1% a day, and that is loan shark territory....

yet idiots that failed P6 education are "prepared to pay 20,000"....

say no more.

they deserve that the smarter ones scam them.

instead of having no 300,000 thb, how much better to start out with -20,000thb in life!!??

...so pathetic.

But I'm just a silly farang, who cares? La la la la!

Write a cheque.

Morons, just have a few stacks of cut up newspaper with a nice crisp 1000 bht note at each end and the money they'd save would take care of the alcohol bill.
