Do you have Adobe Photoshop? If so, design your watermark as a separate image. Choose File / New. Make sure the background of the image is transparent and not any other colour. You may want the image size to be the same size as the photo you want to place the watermark on, that way the scale will not be a problem. Design your watermark.

When satisfied with your design, press Ctrl + A, and then Ctrl + C. (This copies the entire image to the clipboard.)

Switch to the window with the picture you wish to watermark. Under the Layer menu, find Layer from Copy. In the layer panel, which is in the lower right corner of the picture, adjust the opacity of your watermark until it is suitably dimmed.

There may well be easier or more convenient ways, but the above should work ok.
