A fire extinguisher exploded in a service zone inside Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday afternoon, killing one person and injuring four others.

Police said staff were replacing the cylinder when it fell down from its position due to an insecure valve, and caused the fatal blast.

“We have received reports of casualties,” Provincial Police Region 1 chief Pol Lt-General Ampol Buarabporn said.

Police said the blast occurred at a service corner between Zone 2 and Zone 3 of the airport at a spot close to the Airport Link’s station.

The blast scene has been cordoned off. There is no report of the incident affecting the airport’s operations.

And that's why fire extinguishers have to be mounted to a solid object......same goes for oxygen/gas bottles used for diving plus the valva has to be protected by a steel ring....Thailand uses the very old ones which are unsafe.

Also tuktuks use lpg-tanks with only a manual valve while in the West we use ones with electric valves since 20 years. Those close automatic in case of an accident.

Odd, i suspect the ext was hung from its valve assembly .It looks fairly old type ,maybe the bracket gave way causing the ext to fall setting off co2 inside which in turn if the valve was now damaged forcing parts of the valve to act as projectiles hitting an unfortunate worker. The cylinder itself does not look like it exploded. You would only have an inert gas in a fire ext.

I thought that like pulling the pin and pressing the lever the worst that would happen is an escape of the fire retardant inside of it.

Can someone explain more?

Wouldn't think the pressure high enough to tear shrapnel around room.
