This extraordinary development is making headlines in the MSM throughout the World. The BBC has just had a section on it. Also see

I see Pryut has now declared himself a candidate (according to the Asia Times piece).

      Battle of the Titans.

Seconds out....ding, ding I'm loving it.

The tables have not only been turned they have been upended! Prayut gagged his opponents with military threats whilst avowing loyalty to the Royalty. now lets see how he handles this.

Maybe he'll write a song about it.

well his song might mirror "I did it my away" but with a far different ending ????

I quote from the above article: "The NCPO will likely maintain its grip on power, either with Prayut or another surrogate as next prime minister. The voting power of the 250 NCPO-appointed senators, enshrined in the 2017 constitution, assures that. So the question arises, why have elections at all? The vote will be a crucial barometer of whether Thailand is moving forward. A regional beacon for democracy and development during the 1990s and early 2000s, Thailand’s democratic progress was abruptly halted and reversed by the 2006 and 2014 military coups".

When the army gets ousted, and sent out to pasture during the next election, the new administration must do everything in it's power to revise the constitution, or toss it completely. And those 250 totally compromised, bought and paid for NCPO senators need to be retired, forever. Thailand has no need for them, the people do not want them, and Prayuth will be long gone, one can only hope. The army overstepped all boundaries of decency, and patriotism, by committing this utter act of desperation. They demonstrated just how thirsty they are for power and fortune, and the people despise them for it. They need to be completely removed from all aspects of life, here in Thailand. The only thing they are good for, is maintaining the 12 million rai of land they own, training young boys to be obedient, and preventing the neighbors from planning a major incursion. LOL. In other words, next to nothing.

GET OUT. Get out now. You are not wanted. You are not needed. You are not useful. You are not competent. You are hated by your people, and your xenophobia is forcing alot of good ex-pat men to leave forever, thereby harming the economy, and in my opinion the culture, as outside influence can only improve the nation, in this age of globalization. You are moving Thailand backwards at a breath taking pace.

"The only thing they are good for, is maintaining the 12 million rai of land they own, training young boys to be obedient, and preventing the neighbors from planning a major incursion. LOL. In other words, next to nothing."

The only thing they are good for, is maintaining the 12 million rai of land they own -- can't  argue with that, the military camps I've been on are well maintained.

training young boys to be obedient -- debatable, while traumatising and killing a few along the way

and preventing the neighbors from planning a major incursion -- yep to be proven, but very unlikely in real life

It's world wide

It's on the front cyber page of my local (US) paper, let alone BBC The Guardian, and CNN just put it top left on their online edition. Nice to have Bezos's - - - -  pics story relegated ..hah

With the same old establishment running the country, the country will remain stagnant, not very vibrant and will rely more so on China and Chinese tourists.

The present constitution "Of the Army,By the Army,For the Army" must go....

This amazing development might be the only way to cut the Gordian knot that the Thai elite has entangled themselves with and it may be a way of saving face after the abyss of the last 5 years.

Whilst the future under an alternative PM might be full of unknowns we all know the future under the green mob..

I sincerely hope this finishes his PM career for good!

Yes, there's many a slip, but it looks as though Thaksin has outwitted the dimwitted generals.

I had a feeling from a long time ago that the PM was going to get his wings clipped one day

Looks like PPRP will be renamed as PPRIP after being decimated in the election. I give them nothing more than 20 seats. Prayut will end up as a biter old grandfather. As for Prawit. I suggest atonement in the temple for a long time.

"Do you hear the people sing..

It is the song of angry men.."

It'll be the day that Thailand officially joins the list of pariahs if they do..

Not even the Chinese will bother to save them.

This will be true stability with no chance of a coup and the Army have now been put in their place they are here to serve not rule

I should imagine that there is, at the moment, a frantic re-writing of a Friday evening television broadcast script.

But, but, but,  all my watches I've been looking after for dead friends - what will become of them?

Democracy is a nice concept.

Long Live the King and the Kingdom of Thailand.

That would depend on what you thought of your sister.

Are we heading for more democracy or values of pre-1932?

Pre -32 would work for me, take a look at Dusit in BKK and you'll quickly see which part of the world was favored.

True, but the law in question does not require the insulted party to file a complaint. Anybody can file a complaint on behalf those protected by the law, and the courts deal with the matter from a guilty until proven innocent perspective.

Yes, to tell the truth, I'm feeling quite emotional. At least now (it may not last) we can have HOPE - hope for a better Thailand, building a better future for ALL its peoples.

It's not "technically" applicable, but if you think anyone would take a risk you're dreaming. Remember, the law states that you may not insult the monarch, but it does not define what actions are deemed as insults. If you were rude to my sister, for example, I would feel insulted. Remember a dog called Tong Daeng? ????

imho If that truly is the case then there is no point having an election, just do an appointment. In a way it's a similar situation as the one presently Thailand is in (whether it would be a title or a gun). imo Once you have entered the arena of politics you are fair game or it isn't a fair game (see sentence above).

Strange that so many see this as a great day for democracy. While it may see the end of Prayut, and note the article someone posted earlier as to why that assumption may be premature, that still does not mean that this alternative is going to take the country to a better place. There are enormous dangers associated with what it looks like is going on here.

I agree. This is a chance to get rid of Prayut, no more coups, Thaksin and Yingluck amnesty and back to prosperity.
