Police oppose bail after man’s ‘stray’ bullet kills 14-year-old girl in Buri Ram

Police on Monday objected to the release on bail of a 30-year-old Thai man who had allegedly opened fire twice at a group of youngsters, reportedly merely to threaten them, but whose stray bullet fatally struck a Mathayom 2 schoolgirl instead in Buri Ram’s Lam Plai Mat district on Saturday afternoon.

The objection to bail was made when police brought Pichit Maneeterm to apply for a court detention order.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the charges of murder, having a gun and ammunition in his possession without permission, and carrying a gun to a public place, the court heard.

However, Pichit insisted that he had only intended to discharge the unregistered gun, which had been handed down to him from his father, to threaten whom he termed “rivals” that he claimed had also been carrying guns, police said.

He refused to perform a crime re-enactment for fear that he would be attacked by an angry crowd, said Lam Plai Mat precinct’s deputy inspector, Pol Captain Reungsak Saengkham.

In seeking a court order for an initial 12-day detention period, they objected to Pichit’s bail release on the grounds that this was a serious crime that had terrified the public, besides which the suspect may tamper with evidence and/or witnesses or flee.

Pichit was arrested in possession of the .38 pistol that he had allegedly used to shoot at a group of youngsters at Nong Krathum-Kwang Ngoei Bridge, while riding a motorcycle back from a local temple fair on Saturday.

The stray bullet hit the eye of a 14-year-old girl, who was riding pillion of one of the youngsters’ five motorcycles, and exited through the back of her ear.

She succumbed to the catastrophic injury and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

What options do they have for death penalty in this country?

The fact that bail is even an option when the gun you were actively aiming at people goes off and kills somebody just typifies the dire straits the Thai legal system is in.

What a pathetic spectacle. Condolences to the family of the victim here

In other words, he’s not rich enough to walk away from this.

Let the family do their own re-enactment end of story for this filth RIP ????

They should have made him play russian roulette with his pistol until he lost, total and utter waste of both air and water. RIP to the poor girl and condolences to her parents and family.

thai version of 'remorse'; knee deep in ludicrous excuses

Instant termination cures all the problems, no need for re-enactment, bail, or time wasting with further non-sense.

They appear to have made some sense this time by not allowing this criminal out on the roads showing off his childish ego with a gun, I completly agree on someone’s previous comment who said that this idiot would do everyone a favour if he’d pointed the gun to his head instead of killing an innocent young girl, they seriously need to rearrange their priorities in this messed up country ????????‍♂️

As stated in the text if he wants to threaten them I'll shoot in the air NOT directly at them. What a coward...

Shooting at school kids after returning from the temple where he had been seeking merit from the monks, calling these kids rivals, the man is deluded , carrying a 38 unregistered firearm handed down by his grandfather.

He should get the death penalty , he is a reckless fool a danger to society.

I feel for the family suffering for this poor 14 year old girl .
