A 66-year-old man who lived alone and suffered from chronic ailments, was found dead outside a 15-storey apartment building in Bangkok's Bang Sue district on Thursday. It is believed he committed suicide by jumping from the rooftop.

Taopoon police were alerted at 11am that Charn Wanngern died after he fell to the ground in front of the entrance to the A Building of Taopoon Mansion.

Police found a suicide note in the man's room on the 15th floor. No foul play was suspected.

The note also had the mobile phone number of his close friend.

Police called him and learned from the friend that Charn used to own a cabaret troupe in Silom and he recently fell and has been suffering from chronic aliments since then.

Charn needed to see a doctor regularly and the friend had to take him to his hospital as he lived alone. The friend said he had a schedule to take Charn to see his doctor on Friday.

Police said Charn's room was on the west side but he fell from the east side of the building so he likely went up to the roof and jumped down.

There seems to be a lot of jumping going on. Is this the same as other countries?

Can't speak for Europe... however in the U.S. and Canada there are lots of jumpers.   But they usually choose high bridges...  only a relatively few go off of high buildings.....  as far as I know.  (The papers try to keep it quiet.)  In Toronto, going down to the subway (tube) and jumping onto the track as the train comes in is more common than people would like to admit.  The train drivers usually need time off and counselling after seeing a person jump right in front of them and witnessing the horrifying messy results.

However.. close to me in Niagara Falls, a few people have jumped off the Skylon Tower.... One of them had a huge loss in a Niagara Falls casino.    Makes a real mess that has to be mopped up on the hard surface below.   The Skylon is pretty high.

Poor guy. He must have been incredibly desperate to end it all. One feels for his friends and relations - not to mention the luckless public service folk drafted in to deal with the messy aftermath.

Individuals so determined to end it all are surely deserving of a more humane exit.

Can't Big Pharma be asked to come up with a "happy pill" which would provide a painless - and, if possible pleasurable - escape from a living hell?

Of course, there would need to be safeguards. But would anyone determined to go commit suicide NOT choose such an option rather than the mostly ghastly alternatives currently available?

Problem is every time some idiot teen overdoses on a pain killer the knee jerk reaction is to have it placed on the controlled substance list straight away. Good luck getting it as an outpatient.

Just yesterday there was an article where the media was warned to beware of revealing graphic details of charcoal suicides. As sad as this is (I personally believe that no government / institution should tell anyone what to do with their life, and everyone is entitled to call it a day), I only wish that people were more clued up that there are other less gruesome methods like burning some charcoal. The witnesses, police, aftermath services and everyone involved either directly or indirectly would have slightly less to deal with. That said, unfortunately when somebody does chose the more violent suicide route, it's probably a last minute split second decision (nobody will ever know what goes through their minds at that particular moment), the burning of charcoal needs a little bit more planning. Before anyone loses their marbles about my comment and gets the urge to bash it, read it through a few times until you understand the context. I hope he was at peace with himself when he made that decision. RIP.
