Representatives of the Democrat, Future Forward, Chart Pattana and Pheu Thai parties taking part in the forum on foreign policy challenges facing post-election government organized by Thai PBS Wednesday night.

In an election dominated by political polarization and bread-and-butter issues, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that foreign policy has been put on the backburner. But candidates in the upcoming March-24 general election have admitted that dealing with the fast-changing world is a major challenge awaiting the post-election administration.

They agreed during an election forum organized by Thai PBS on Wednesday night that the rise of China and how Thailand is going to perform as ASEAN chairman are among the challenges that require immediate attention of the next administration.

Kiat Sittheeamorn of the Democrat Party said how Thailand should balance its relationship with China is a big challenge. However, as chairman of ASEAN this year, Thailand is in a position to play a key role in getting the regional grouping to adopt a common stand on this issue.

Getting away from the Chinese dangling the Renminbi, some times its better to wait and go with out, instead of borrowing money just like mum and dads do every day, why politicians lose this common sense when elected is unbelievable and inevitable, that needs to change,

All these parties need to look at how Iceland does things and just maybe some good  ideas will form.

A major challenge ??? Balderdash I say, pure twaddle once again from an ill informed Thai. Thailand is nothing more than a puppet country for China. Whatever China wants in Thailand they get, simple. If there is actually a challenge it will be because the Government will try to coverup just now must influence China exerts over Thailand from your average informed Thai citizen. That will be no easy task as day by day they see this massive influx from China, the Government bending over backwards to placate China at the slightest misstep.

It is a non topic.

Thai and Chinese have been getting along well for the last few hundred years.

Just look at all the intermarriages.   There was never any incident of mass killing of Chinese by Thai.

Not the same in Indonesia.

problem is Thailand lacks the intestinal fortitude to say no to them and simply do as they please, cant see it changing unfortunately, they will always be subservient to china. Would be nice to see a govt that will stand up and stop sucking up, all those brown rings are getting a lot darker with the current mob but I cant see any of the options doing so, they all lack the balls to do it.
