As the parent of a Thai — If you have permission to stay from a Non ‘O’ visa entry you can apply for a work permit, and you can work once you’ve received the work permit.

You can only get a work permit based on employment.

With an O-visa based on Thai family you can apply for a WP once you get a job.

In other words, there is no such thing as a WP issued specifically / exclusively on the basis that you are the father of a Thai child.

You need to have a job and a contract of employment.

Job Description: 'Father',

Salary - 'pay self 50,000Baht a month',

won't be accepted to issue you a work permit.

There is no such thing as a personal WP.

In most cases you need to be employed by a Thai company with a proper contract of employment, in a job which is NOT on the list of occupations / professions reserved for Thai citizens only.

If your wife is running a business then there are some limited flexibilities.

I think you are misunderstanding what a Thai work permit is.

It is not carte blanche permission to work in Thailand. It is specific to one position in one company in one location. e.g. web developer for ZYX Tech Ltd in their Rayong office.

It doesn't matter if you have a Thai child or not. If you have a recognised job offer, the Labour Ministry will consider the application for a work permit.

The question was is it possible to get a work permit on a visa being the parent of a Thai child, company etc was a given.

Okay, that is not what you initially asked but putting that aside.

A visa, gained from an embassy or consulate, based on visiting, rather than being the parent of, a Thai child would be a non-immigrant O visa. It is certainly possible to then process a work permit after entering Thailand on a non-immigrant O visa. Some employers will insist you change the visa to a non-immigrant B visa as they are either unfamiliar with O visas or they have encountered problems with processing at government departments.

The short answer is yes.
