I agree that the US president is more than ceremonial, and the Americans would do well to pass a constitutional amendment to make the president merely ceremonial as with Ireland.

Ireland is/was/has been under the rule of a king (or 2 or 6) and the flip to having a president was purely cerimonial. America has never been ruled by a king and the only 1 that tried got his backside handed to him. A constitutional Amendment can not be passed the subverts the whole of the constitution because it would be overturned by the SCOTUS as, well, unconstitutional. :wai:

The vote will get around 51 or 52 votes in the senate, i.e. 4 or 5 Republicans. Trump will veto. It will go to the courts.

Republican Senators are not willing to break with Trump yet. And maybe never. They need to see a bigger change in public opinion, particularly amongst registered Republicans.

Really? You are seriously claiming that if all the Constitutionally specified procedures were followed to ratify such an amendment, the Supreme Court would overturn it? Wow. Can you point to a clause in the Constitution that supports your contention? And right wingers claim that liberal justices play fast and loose with the Constitution.

Huh! the wall is to stop the illegals and the drugs etc. What would be the point of waiting several years before building it if thousands of illegals and millions of dollars of drugs etc came over in the meantime?

With drones (and the future thereof) it is easy to transport drugs over the wall.

Thus no valid argument.

He doesn't need a popular vote, and mid terms are usually a protest vote. We will only know how the voters really feel in 2020.

The wall is a symbol for those that voted for Trump. It doesn't really matter if it works perfectly or not. He needs it to satisfy his base, therefore he will build it.

Troll post removed.

If the popular vote doesn't matter, why go on about being "out of touch" with voters? (to head off expected deflections, consult the post I was replying to). I think the mid-terms were an indication of current voter trends, and the popular vote (which is what "voters really feel") didn't favor him in the presidential elections either.

So if referencing "being out of touch", "how voters really feel" and so on - your "argument" such as it is, doesn't hold water. If you wish to point out that the winning the popular vote is not mandatory for winning the presidential election, that's a different matter, and pretty much countering the view I responded to.
