More than 900 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza this year despite the ceasefire, according to the latest figures from the Hamas-run health ministry. The ministry says more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began on October 10, including 301 children. The figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but the UN considers the ministry's casualty data broadly reliable. Deadly strikes continue despite the truce Israel and Hamas agreed to halt the war after accepting US President Donald Trump's 20-point peace plan, which called for a suspension of “all military operations”. Yet Gaza has continued to see deadly attacks. The health ministry recorded more than 100 deaths in every month from April through August, with July the deadliest at 152, including 21 children. BBC Verify has analysed dozens of videos showing the aftermath of strikes on locations including a beachside café, displaced people's tents and a reported funeral procession. Israel insists it is targeting militants The Israel Defense Forces disputes the ministry's figures and says there is no basis for assuming every listed death resulted from Israeli military action. The IDF says it continues to operate precisely, target threats and take measures to limit civilian casualties. It also says Hamas and other armed groups have continued to violate the ceasefire and threaten Israeli forces. Conflict monitor ACLED has recorded around 200 Israeli strikes during the ceasefire that reportedly killed Hamas operatives or other armed militants. ‘Ceasefire in name only’ Hugh Lovatt of the European Council on Foreign Relations said Gaza had experienced a “ceasefire in name only”, with almost daily Israeli air and drone strikes continuing. He warned the violence could become a central obstacle to implementing Trump's ceasefire agreement. Children bear the cost Unicef says more than 300 children have been killed since the ceasefire, with hundreds more injured. Its global spokesperson James Elder called the toll “absurd and devastating”, warning that a ceasefire producing such figures is failing children. Humanitarian workers have also been killed, while independent researchers say civilian harm incidents remain high.
