Last April my work permit was expiring and I wanted to cancel it. My employer told me I didn't need to cancel it and could just leave Thailand. I didn't go to the immigration office and just left Thailand. I came back into Thailand after applying for a 60 days tourist visa with no problems.

I know need to apply for a new work permit but the old one wasn't cancelled. I spoke to my old employer to get this work permit cancelled so I don't have problems getting a new one. They have been told by labour office I must pay a fine of 500 baht per day to cancel the work permit. This equates to 182,500 baht because it was last year.

I have read people had to pay 500 or 1500 baht fine because they didn't cancel their work permit.

I need to advice please.

As far as I know there is no dailey fine for not canceling a work permit. I have only heard of a fixed fine no matter how long it is.

You could have a problem, if your old employer only canceled your work permit and did not get a void stamp in your passport you overstayed your visa and I believe all the overstay penalties would apply.

He left the country so there would be no way an overstay fine could be charged.

Be honest & truthful with your new employer.  Beyond that, do nothing. If it becomes an issue, let him handle it.  I did that once, after my first employer refused to cancel my W.P. The personnel officer at my new employer resolved the problem with a phone call. I doubt there was a fine. If there was, it didn't come out of my pocket.

I have been honest with my new emploer and informed them of this issue. I just wished Thai people knew what they where talking about. So much conflicting information from the people who should know.

When I left my employment I did not cancel the work permit.  I later got a new one with no problem no questions asked. This happened twice.  I did not leave the country

Hi I don't want to steal the topic but this is work permit related.

I have just received a work permit from Bangkok, with the Non B visa issued in Singapore and the project I work on will be Sattahip.

I am being told by the issuing company that I have to travel to BKK to extend the visa to one year multi entry and then do 90 day reports also in BKK.

Do any of you knowledgeable guys know if this is fact, or is it only because the company do not have an office near the work site?

If it is not the case is there a link to the relevant law so that I can go back to them.

I am guessing that the company you are working for has privileges that allows you to apply for your extension and work permit at the one stop center in Bangkok.

That would explain why the say you have to the extension in Bangkok.

You could do you 90 day reports online or mail to avoid the trip to Bangkok.

Thanks for reply

What you are saying is probably correct and they said I could do by post, just don't trust my passport being shipped around Thailand.

I have worked in Thailand on a number of occasions never with any of these problems previously just a sign of the times I suppose.

I will look at online reporting.

Thanks again

You send copies of your passport when doing the report by mail.
