Popular Post ebean001
put the fires out. Why not get a reasonable, safe number of fire trucks from other Thai cities. even from nearby countries. How about planes dropping whatever they drop to put out fires. USA has plenty of them. Pay the price because Songkran is around the corner and tourism could be effected this year. it might even be worse if tourist come this year. they will take away a negative message and future years could be greatly impacted. Fix the problem now so businesses can make money now and in the future. it am sure it is worth the cost.

Looks like Thailand cannot do much - except declare war and send water bombers (joke) I used FIRMS data for the last week of March. There are 1040 red or orange dots in this image, 760 are not in Thailand. So 27% of the fires in this image are in Thailand, 73% are outside. 48% of the territory is Thai, so around a 3:1 ratio of external to internal fires. I have archive data for the same area for the same week in 2010. I don't have the tools to go a proper analysis - can only eyeball it. To me it looks like a modest-to-reasonable reduction in fires within Thai borders and a massive increase in Burma. Laos and Cambodia are not much changed. Government can't enforce because they have no solutions. Maybe they need a committee to study the problem... 2

chingmai331
You jest, of course. No Thai govt official is now, nor ever has been, accountable to the people. Thailand is a kingdom, not a democratic country. Edited April 2, 2019 by blackcab Capitals removed

Slash & burn has worked for centuries, while nowadays there is the option on fields to plough the stubble under. Works in the west where corn is also a cash crop. The corn is used, the stalks become fodder, the rest is ploughed under.
