(Reuters) - A Chinese woman who got through security checkpoints at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida carrying a thumb drive coded with "malicious" software was arrested on Saturday for entering a restricted property and making false statements to officials, according to a court filing.

Documents filed by the Secret Service on Monday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida say that shortly after noon on Saturday, Yujing Zhang approached a Secret Service agent screening visitors to Mar-a-Lago seeking entrance to the club.

Zhang produced two Chinese passports displaying her photo and said she wanted to go to the pool. Secret Service officers could not initially find her name on an access list for the property, according to the Secret Service affidavit filed with the court.

A club manager said that a man named Zhang was a club member, and even though Yujing Zhang did not give a clear answer as to whether the man was her father, the Secret Service affidavit says resort officials allowed her on the property on the assumption she was related to a member.

Resort personnel became suspicious after Zhang appeared to have trouble explaining why she was visiting Mar-a-Lago, according to the affidavit.

Zhang initially said she was there for an event staged by a group called the United Nations Chinese American Association. But resort staff found no such event was scheduled, according to the court filing.

A receptionist then contacted Secret Service personnel who questioned Zhang and concluded she did not have "any legitimate documentation" authorizing her entry to Mar-a-Lago, according to the filing.

After detaining her, investigators found in Zhang's possession four cellphones, a laptop computer, an external hard drive device and a thumb drive, the Secret Service court filing says. Initial examination of the thumb drive determined it contained "malicious malware," the Secret Service said.

The White House referred questions on the incident to the Secret Service on Tuesday. The Secret Service declined comment, saying the investigation was still open.

In a court filing on Tuesday, a public defender representing Zhang said she was invoking her right to remain silent.

A Justice Department spokeswoman had no comment on the arrest.

Did she work for Huawei?

What was she hoping to do with the USB drive, and what's to stop a real member from doing the same thing?  If attacking the POTUS is as easy as managing to get into his tacky little beach club then he should be made to stop using it as a place to conduct government business.

As opposed to beneficial malware?

Your point with the use of the USB drive to install malware is interesting.

Typically, malware is installed via internet connection (ie., email & fake web sites) - no need for a personal appearance and higher risk of discovery.

But it's well-known that Trump doesn't use e-mail although his family relations do. Furthermore, Trump has been using his personal unsecured iPhone to make calls and twitter while in the White House, giving Chinese and Russia spies easy access to his personal communications and interests. https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/24/18020746/president-donald-trump-iphone-personal-calls-china-russia-spies-eavesdropping

Use of a USB flash drive might be the delivery method of choice for malware. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive_security ; https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/heres-a-list-of-29-different-types-of-usb-attacks/

So perhaps to make better direct access to Trump's iPhone (did Zhang have a matching iPhone with her that she could leave Trump with a clone from a download of data into it from his phone?), malware would have to be physically installed. Zhang appeared to have planned several excuses on her illegal entry into Mar-a-Lago, perhaps relying on Trump's capricious behavior and disregard for security at Mar-a-Lago to bypass Secret Service scrutiny.

That's something I've often wondered about.  There's a Bear Grylls show where he goes to Alaska with Barack Obama, when he was president.  At the end of their trip they take a selfie, but have to borrow a phone from one of the entourage because, as Obama explains, he's not allowed to carry a smart phone for security reasons.  I wonder what's changed?

Piss poor security on the part of Non-Secret Service security. Leave it to a civilian receptionist to press the alarm button and wake the 'real' secret service up.

I have often thought of our Government in the UK having its own secure network, with modified operating system and computers without USB Ports, CD ROMs etc. To prevent downloading and uploading of data and software.

She just wanted a good old Trump groping- no harm done

Perhaps a relative of or related to the Chinese/Republican former massage parlor owner in Florida that Trump was cozy with??? You know, the place where Robert Kraft allegedly was videotaped and later arrested for prostitution...at a location that involved alleged human trafficking.

We all thought Trump was just seriously compromised with Russia and Putin... But who knows... perhaps there's a whole other Chinese side of him that we're just beginning to find out about....
