Congress will be looking at a much broader range of possible criminal activity.

The *democrats* will be trying to look *for* political points.

This is nonsense. Tax cheats are often found out and prosecuted because of lying about the nature of expenses and deductions. Like claiming an expense as payment to a lawyer but it really turns out to

You said it yourself- POSSIBLE crimes. It's just a fishing expedition in search of a crime without any proof that a crime may exist, which is why Trump quite rightly will not agree to present them.

I understand the left thinks Trump must be guilty of something, but the laws of the land don't, or shouldn't allow fishing expeditions for political reasons.

No one was demanding his tax returns for public scrutiny when he was just a reality tv show presenter.

It seems Congress wants to see the returns in case they reveal anything broader than specific tax code crimes.

The only things I can imagine that could be found might be something related to the foundation or maybe the corporate expensing of his personal lifestyle expenses. It might be embarassing to him, if such a thing is possible, but it will have been looked at already. Now, maybe Congress could coerce the IRS to look at it again with an agenda, but that is a big big risk for them IMO. More likely it is just something to command a few weeks of the news cycle.

LOL. They just want to see if there is anything they can use against him politically.

I'm pretty sure the US laws don't allow an investigation without some evidence that a crime may have been committed, except apparently, some in congress think it's different when it's Trump that they are wanting to investigate.

Except for the fact that both of these things actually happened.

And what were the findings of the justice department and/or congress?

Dude, congress cant just demand a persons tax returns without a valid reason, and that reason has to be solid. There isnt going to be a way to frame this in a legitimate way that isn't political attacks.

When you become president, you dont lose "privacy privileges" lmao you're just making stuff up now.

Dude, you aren't keeping up with the conversation:

Regarding the law:

(f) Disclosure to Committees of Congress(1) Committee on Ways and Means, Committee on Finance, and Joint Committee on Taxation Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives, the chairman of the Committee on Finance of the Senate, or the chairman of the Joint Committee on Tax-ation, the Secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request, except that any re-turn or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.   https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCODE-2011-title26/pdf/USCODE-2011-title26-subtitleF-chap61-subchapB-sec6103.pdf

I too, would like to know what statue you're leaning on here.

[edit - can't seem to get it to quote the right person.  The quote is from @Thainesss]

For a completely innocent man, he rejects cooperation with any investigations.  He’s a public servant-servant-public-for the people of the country-not himself, not Republican or Democrat.  All information about his life, business and past should be in full view, especially because he is running again, and seems to have much to hide

He’s a public servant-everyone has the right to know everything about him-regardless of party, race, sexual affiliation (although I think his first wife was a man).  He works for all Americans, whether he likes it or not ????

Frankly, I think Trump's tax returns are a perfect occasion to have a good laugh. Why would anyone prevent us to have a good laugh?

I have already bought a pair of Pampers for this occasion. ????????

Here are two messages American voters understand:

1. Trump promised to release his taxes.

2. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.

In any case he really, really, really does not want them to be seen.

Trump is a man who has sided with a known enemy of America over the warnings of his own national security. This is dangerously close to the textbook definition of treason. The proof of innocence would be if Trump would be open and honest.

Congressional oversight is a Constitutional duty.

Get over that already.

We should be more worried about interest rate normalization (or the lack thereof) than this distraction show...as when the brown stuff next hits the fan then they will not have an interest rate to cut and everything will go south big time. Only reason it wasn't so bad in 2008 was that interest rates were 5% everywhere (so room to cut and stimulate) and subsequently they decided there would be QE free money (tax payer money too) for all the business scumbags that caused the problem in the first place.
