Future Forward Party leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit said criminal charges against him were politically motivated after the election.

The billionaire-turned-politician told United Nations representatives and foreign diplomats after reporting to police on Saturday that the charges levelled against him related to alleged incidents four years ago.

Police have charged him with violating Article 116 of the Criminal Code by inciting unrest, violating Article 189 of the Criminal Code by helping a student activist flee arrest, and violating Article 215 for taking part in an unlawful gathering to cause disturbance in the country. He denied all charges.

Police charged him a week after his party's surprisingly strong showing in the election, winning more than 80 seats in the House of Representatives.

“I’m concerned because the cases would be tried in a military court instead of the Criminal Court since it involves Article 116 [sedition],” Thanathorn told the representatives of UN Human Rights Commissioner, the European Union, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands.

The official who filed the complaint -- Colonel Burin Thongprapai -- is not a police officer but a junta representative, he said.

The sedition charge was made against not only politicians but also activists to gag them after protests against the junta over the past years. “The regime creates a fear in society to silence us,” Thanathorn told the diplomats.

“I am innocent and ready to stand firm in the court. I urge all Thais and the international community to call for civil rights and to stand up for human rights for the betterment of our society,” he said.

i've been to a number of thanathorn's speeches, his party's platform (agenda) is basic

1. real democracy

2. equality

3. limit army involvement in politics

that's it

if you ask me it's what thailand has badly needed for a long time with (all due respect)

I would be interested to know what became of the "student activist" Thanathorn is supposed to have helped to "escape" the police. Was he prosecuted? Or did it all quietly go away?

100% was thinking the same thing (and how about the other millions of crimes that occur on a daily basis from trivial to serious) but for some reason helping some students escape needs an army court

Can’t the military just forget and move on??? If they think  Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit was “guilty” back then, what about the military’s military coup??!! Totally is hypocritical. -Besides we know  there is big jealousy towards Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit. He’s intelligent, successful businessman, and speaks the truth for a real democracy in Thailand.

I think I read he ran for an MP seat under the FFP banner. Don't know if he won his race.

And the next sedition charge for that speech is on the printer.

From now on stay in a bungalow never go to the 20th floor of any building and keep up the good work they are rattling ????

He's rattled the Junta's cage... they don't like it because he's attracting the young voter, causing an up-rising in questions from the public in how they handle the countries politics.

Shall not be tolerated by a dictatorship.

A couple of months ago, poster Baboon made a brilliant comment (which should be burned into all our hearts and memories - it is so true); it ran:

'Thailand is a military with a country - not a country with a military'.

I have never seen a more succinct and more nail-on-the-head hitting formulation of Thailand truth than that!

Without a doubt.

I'm sure that well before the day of the 'election', a committee belonging to the junta's Department Of Devious Affairs held various meeting to decide in advance what to do if party X, Y, or Z gained too many votes.

Their plan is now in action.

The dinosaurs must really be feeling threatened with these pathetic attempts to hassle him.

^

Ain't no law here to fight

Only thing you fighting here is elitists and their money ...

Will be another mass protest shooting coup before long .

One can only hope western countries man up and impose some sanctions as this election is a middle finger to democracy and genuine voters ...

This guy represents the future and the dinosaurs are only stoking up resentment and their ultimate fall by trying to deny him a platform. The youth will have their say soon enough.

Not sure even the call from Thai's and the international community will keep the junta's puppets from doing whatever they feel will aid their benefactor.

The Hun Sen way of dealing with opponents ! Prayut learned a lot from his buddy in the east !

No wrong, in the western “democracy” at least in Europe everyone serves the unelected  bureaucrats that doesn’t believe in countries sovereignty, just look at how the bullies in Brussels behave towards brexit...

democracy is about people are in charge and control their country...

The term democracy have changed rapidly the last two decades two fit the unelected uneducated rants in Brussels opinion...

so everyone comment on thaivisaforum over and over again shouldn’t forget that if they are from a country member of the European Union should be quiet... if you are from Canada, USA, Switzerland then you have the right to complain, but it’s a bit double standard bashing Thailand on their democracy while you are a Eu person where democracy doesn’t exist anymore ????????

Correct - but history would suggest that so long as your butt and mine points to the ground, it is NOT likely to happen any time soon, if ever. And certainly not during the course of this sham election! ????

Fortunately I am not an EU person, nor a total believer in the the U.N. either! ????

He could well be the "third force" that Thailand really needs to end the yellow shirt/red shirt conflict. It seems Thaksin's power is waning and the country needs a new figure to take on the establishment.

If he is jailed or disqualified for such trumped-up 4 year old charges then Thailand will be a laughing stock to the Western world and really back in the 3rd world basket (case).

I can't see those running the show being concerned about what other countries think.

The pure definition of being BRAVE.

Perfectly summed up! European Mafia Union ! But there are British Politicians doing all they can to prevent the decision by the people to leave!

If his party had not got many votes then the junta puppets (law and courts) wouldn’t have bothered doing any of this ! Now we know what neighbour Cambodia and Thailand have in common when it comes to freedom of speech and Human rights

Were they out of it? Keep trumpeting Thai 4.0 but I don't think I ever saw them get past Thai 1.0!
