Haze: What to do about corn without killing the golden goose?

No one has yet mentioned the obvious solution. Cut quotas, tariffs and taxes on imported corn to zero. Then it will be uneconomic to grow industrial corn in Thailand (my pig farming friend cannot understand why corn is so expensive in Thailand, it is about 50% more than the world price). Those large companies who contract for the corn make a substantial profit when they sell it on, or process it themselves. But hey, who cares as long as it makes money for Thai companies and not foreigners.

Cheaper corn, and now the farmers can be incentivised to grow something more suitable for the environment. Some may remember back in the 80's when Thailand suffered a lot of erosion due to rapacious logging companies, that is why many of the forest laws were enacted. The corn growing on hills will just repeat this problem.
